proposed legislation re new jersey diners

Thanks for posting this; I saw it and would love to see diners a) remain open and b) go back to being open later! I understand that 24/7 is no longer sustainable, but hate the fact that when I leave a show (ferinstance at the Basie in Red Bank), the 3 diners I pass on the way home are closing at 11pm. On weekend nights! We would’ve stopped for dessert or a snack or whatever, but no luck.
I was actually up in NNJ and had lunch at the TickTock today (as shiny and yummy as ever) and they have a sign at the driveway entrance saying they’re now open until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. But not in this area. SIGH

i grew up in bergen county and have family in passaic, so it’s usually the pompton queen on 23. but i’ve never been to ticktock. i’m in boston, but maybe the next time i’m down.

Ditto for Bergen County. (In Wyckoff and a couple of surrounding towns as I grew up and moved out). For me, it was the State Line Diner in Mahwah (which actually opened the year I got my driver’s license! Convenient! LOL) Although less diner-ish and more restaurant-ish. And which, BTW, is still a 24-hour diner @CurlzNJ . The Chit-Chat Diner in Hackensack says 24 hours as well.

In Massachusetts, @wonderwoman, if you ever get down to Falmouth, I cannot recommend Betsy’s Diner more highly. (no website; just a public FB page). Went to Rosebud Diner in Somerville years ago; now a “bar and kitchen”.

Thanks! Only issue is that I live in Asbury Park now…
And fwiw, I spent much of my high school years between Paul’s Diner in Denville/Mt. Lakes and the (now gone) Parsippany (then Empire) Diner. Paul’s is still open and cranking, but I don’t think they’re 24 hours any more.

i’m in somerville. less than thrilled with the reimagining of the rosebud. i’ll make a note for the next time i’m in falmouth. and if you’re in northampton, hit miss flo’s diner

Totally agreed regarding Rosebud. I like what they’re going for but the execution doesn’t seem to quite get there. How do you feel about Kelly’s?

I’ll second the Miss Florence Diner.

@wonderwoman , @LindaWhit , @a_m (and others): I have two words for you – Andy’s Diner. See here, for example:

I know it’s not near New Jersey, but this is HO: threads that start in New Jersey don’t stay in New Jersey.

Andy’s is not one pf this places with long hours and menus like the telephone books of the last century, but it’s worth going to having. (Having said that, I haven’t been there in a couple of years – because I haven’t really been to too many places over that time.)

ETA: @wonderwoman: there are nail salons close to Andy’s, although Ken Rogoff gets his done at Nails by Porter, a bit of a hike from Andy’s.

I’ll have to give it another shot sometime! I’ve been there on occasion years and years ago but didn’t remember it being all that special. Happy to be corrected on that!

Still a bit further afield from Somerville: Deluxe Town Diner in Watertown. That one, I’ve been to as recently as late last year, and I think it’s pretty top notch. (Though maybe a touch diminished as compared to a decade ago.) What say you?

I say yes on Delux, although on our last visit in 2023 we felt they were a little down from peak form, and their interestingly “distressed” upholstery was now in active need of life support. So I have no recent experiences, but at one we ate there weekly for several years and loved it.

I don’t want to oversell Andy’s. Skim my posts and you’ll see I offer them, as Forster did for democracy, a mild two cheers.

But, trying to cling to the ostensible topic of this thread, 7 km closer to Trenton, NJ, than Andy’s (441 vs 448).

So many typos in so few words!

i’ll have to try andy’s.

Again, no overpromises. But it’s an original.

I live 5 minutes from a great 24 hour spot (shout out to Park Ave Diner!), it’s such a treat! But I just cannot agree with tax breaks for a specific class of restaurant like this. Let the market forces do its thing.
