Northern Dumpling Kitchen, Times Square, Richmond Hill ‘ - A quick update

Glad to report, this award winning Richmond Hill, Northern Chinese Cuisine icon is still as ‘ Great ‘ as before, offering incredibly tasty food at an amazing price point served by super friendly staff.

Our party of 5 ordered 9 yummy dishes for a mind blowingly cheap $115!!..Unreal!!

Some notable dishes we had included:

  • ‘ Award winning ‘ sliced pork in spicy garlic sauce and cilantro. Still as
uniquely delicious as before. IMHO, nobody does it better in town!
  • Double smoked Pork belly, Scallion Pancake wrap. The smoky aroma of the
pork?! Wow! Paired with the sweet bean paste and crispy pancake and a
    gorgeously delicious bite was conceived!
  • Double Cooked Pork. Perfectly executed traditional dish, well seasoned with
nice wok-hay. Degree of spiciness was spot on
  • Northern Style Tea Smoked Duck. Fragrant and mouthwatering. Talk about
finger licking good! So good, we even chewed and down some of the
    flavorful, crunchy bones!
  • Pork and Bok-Choi Pot Stickers. Crispy bottom. The dainty and well crafted
dumpling was packed full of umami filled broth.

Other main and side dishes ordered include:
Stirred fry Taiwanese A- Vegetable with minced garlic, Stuffed sticky rice roll, Hot and Savory Soybean milk, Stirred fry Cabbage with Chinese bacon. Dessert of Fried Egg white doughnut with homemade red bean paste stuffing……so good!

Now that this visit reconfirmed the quality and our faith of this place, we will definitely return….and soon!

“ Northern Dumpling Kitchen, Richmond Hill “ - After 2 decades, still going strong and still my go-to Richmond Hill place for consistently good,
casual and classic Northern style Chinese Cuisine!

Though a frequent take-out customer of theirs, it must have been over a year since I last had a seat-down dinner at this neighbourhood gem.

With temperature reverting back to less hostile Winter normal, we decided to have a casual family dinner at this favorite Northern Chinese eatery of ours, after enduring a ‘tear jerking‘ movie - ‘ Wuthering Heights ‘!

Glad to report, after twenty years in business, their food is as lovingly prepared and consistently great tasting as before! A rare feat in this volatile day and age!

Besides the ‘must-order’, award winning and peerless, uber-tasty, ‘Sliced leg of pork in garlic chili oil and Cilantro’, we added the following dishes to our menu:

  • Northern style, Jia-Jang bean paste, hand-pulled noodles, lo-mien ( amazingly tasty sauce, more complex than their Korean cousin’s version )
  • Spicy minced pork, Dan-Dan Noodles ( a thicker consistency broth with more peanut butter would be perfect! )
  • Pork and Chinese cabbage Pot Stickers ( crispy bottom, the cocoon packed full of delicious broth )
  • Stir fried ‘Chinese Ratatouille‘ of fried potato chunks, green peppers and eggplants! ( wok-fried with Brown sauce instead of stewed with a tomato based sauce! )
  • Stir fried sliced beef with Chinese Kale aka Gai Lan ( acceptable rendition of a Cantonese dish from a Northern kitchen! )
  • Crispy, smoked, Chinese style whole duck confit ( Crispy, crunchy, savory and salty. Great with beer! )
  • Stir fried Pea Shoot with minced garlic ( nice wok-hay finish and non-soggy )
  • Complimentary dessert of Red Bean Paste pancake! ( just the right sweet touch to finish off a delightful meal )

Overall, a well executed, near faultless and enjoyable dinner with super-friendly, attentive service and great value pricing.

By the time we left, the place was packed to the hilt with lines forming outside the entrance! A testament of this place’s popularity and attractiveness!

Chester Elegante used to recommend the rice flour cakes, and something made with preserved greens.

I have enjoyed everything I have ordered at NDK, but it’s been ages since my last visit.

Wow! Been ages since I heard the name of ex-chowhounder- ‘Chester Elegante’ mentioned on food blogs! He used to attend all the chowmeet I organized in the past!

Wow! I am surprised that you’re not in touch with more former Hounds.

The other local hound that I occasionally meet up with is ’ Estufarian ’
Actually, I made more contacts with hounds outside of Canada!..HKTraveller, Peech, Fourseasons, Alfred ( from Austria ), Erica1,…etc to name a few.

I’m still in touch with a few local Hounds, especially rstuart and alteredstate. I see Monte once in a while and I also see the Hound who runs Little Sister.

I also stay in touch with some Hounds in NY and NJ, mostly through WhatsApp and IG. We have met up many times over the years.
