Yes this is the spot. Thanks for the info
A pet peeve in restaurants (one of many) is when they ask if you want X without telling you that X is not included in what you ordered. And of course asking if it’s included makes one look cheap.
njmonthly.com has a list of 10 restaurants that were either recently opened or are about to open in the Jersey Shore (or the beach to you locals:smiley: ).

Nice to see local smoke expanding! I like their bbq, service and pricing.
10 more reasons you need to move south!
Maybe only 9 reasons. The limited reviews I’ve heard about La Mondina have not been that great.
On the other hand, I met the owners of Maeberry today at work. They seem very nice, which means nothing in terms of how the restaurant is, but it is a start.
I don’t have high hopes for Iron Whale, just another McCloones restaurant
$14 fish tacos and equally expensive drinks. No thanks
Is that the new place where Rella’s used to be? Gosh, I’m disappointed. I was hoping for something good and close!
It is. One person’s review was Meh. The other said the food was fine but nothing special. Both commented on how loud it was. I was hoping for something little more special.
TriCity News is reporting that Victor Rallo, Jr. and his partners (Birravino, Undici, and Surf BBQ) has purchased Esca in NYC from Mario Batali. Here’s the NYT article:
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/07/dining/esca-batali-bastianich.html
I would think 3 restaurants would be a lot to handle but I guess he can do it. I’d be on an island sipping a frozen drink if I had his kind of money.
We had dinner at Esca once right after 9/11. Despite the good reviews it had received when it opened the previous year (The Times gave it 3 stars), I found the food disappointing. In addition, service was poor, and seating was extremely cramped. Needless to say, we’ve never been back. But irrespective of that lone experience, I was sad to read that the Batali situation business has dropped at least 30%. Now that Batali is out of the picture, Mr. R. and I are considering going again. Hopefully, we’ll have a better experience than the first one.
P.S. We stopped going to Del Posto because of Batali’s financial involvement. After we read that was no longer the case, and that Chef Melissa Rodriguez has become a partner, we went for lunch a few weeks ago and had an outstanding meal.
Ended up at Iron Whale because the people I was with needed to eat quickly and they had space. I’ll slightly correct my earlier report; while there are $14 (and more $, iirc) tacos, they start at $12 for two.
All I can say is that my worst fears were true. The $12 cod fish tacos (TWO of them) were the whitest/most unflavored items I’ve eaten since I was prepping for a colonoscopy (and I’m NOT lying)…no flavor on the uncooked tortilla, no flavor on the small single piece of fish (think finger-sized), no flavor in the ‘pico de gallo’ (which was just RAW chopped pale tomato, from what I could tell), AND they’re still waiting on their liquor license, so it’s currently BYO wine/beer, which you find out once you’re seated–and there’s no place close by to remedy that problem. The NY strip is $39 and was overcooked based on the request. I’m told the salmon was excellent ($24? $28?).
The decor is lovely.
It will take a lot, but I’m sure someone will convince me to sit at the bar once it’s up and running. I’ll continue to hit MOGO on the boardwalk for a quick meal, thankyouverymuch.
good to know they are consistent (consistently shitty is still consistent). Somewhere VJ is smiling into his always lovely, always ripe tomatoes.
Damn. Sorry to hear it wasn’t that good.
Is it me, or are tacos trending bigtime now? It seems like every place has some taco offering.
Or something they call tacos.
Bigtime now? Where have you been for the past 10 years…?
Dude you were the one who got me into real tacos back on chow hound! It was you equal mark and tapas. Thank you sir!
Are you in the h town yet?
Haha man those were the good old days! These days I rarely get the tacos at authentic places any more, I prefer the tortas or quesadillas, which I highly recommend if you haven’t tried! It’s quite a bit different from what we’re used to - it’s almost more like a loaded taco.
I’m in Hazlet! Haven’t really eaten out anywhere worth mentioning, went to a nice little local Italian joint with a friend in Middletown (Fratelli’s). Food was pretty tasty there!
I gotta say being close to the Indian and Polish/Eastern European makets on that Route 9 section makes me super happy though. Got some banging pork pate from the place in the farmers market the other day.
