Nganda is a new West African place that had opened up near Gerrard Square and we decided to give it a try. You mainly order from the online menu, which would be fine except the cell signal sucks inside the restaurant. You also pay for everything right away, including the tip, which seemed a bit premature since we hadn’t yet experienced the service. As it turned out, after our dishes were delivered, the server never again checked in on us.
Shayo featured sliced, marinated, and grilled beef, fragrant with suya spices and served with jollof rice. As seems fairly typical, the beef was moderately tough and gristly, although the flavour was good. The rice was fine, but not as flavourful as Suya Spot.
Bolingo featured goat that was even tougher, although again the flavour was enjoyable. It came with little steamed cassava breads.
Kitoko was my favourite, featuring Congolese pounded cassava leaves, stewed wilh mackerel, sardine, smoked fish, eggplant, onion & palm oil and served with fufu (a steamed, rounded dumpling of pounded yam). The greens were lovely and pungent with strongly flavoured fish.
We’d go back to try the chicken, in the hopes that it was flavourful but not as chewy. We’d also like to try their donuts.
