New items you’ve purchased at the grocery store

Thank you! I did look at the link , but didn’t see that part. I was wondering if that (Pahadi pink) was the kind of garlic they use.

For the record, I have probably heard my share of “tasting notes” in the context of wine and olive oil, but wondered if I understood the term correctly.

When I came across their chai spice, I started reading thru the site and learned many things I didn’t know including pink garlic which I was completely unfamiliar with.

The best part of shopping spices and herbs is learning.

I love the idea of dried garlic from a specific variety of garlic!

ETA it reminded me of these items I bought in Sacramento earlier this summer, but have yet to use.

I need a “what new spice that is languishing in your pantry did you use today” thread!

I own a jar of that curry powder which I adore. So fresh!
Black garlic I buy at a local market in small qty for a very specific purpose. BUT-If I buy it, I use it is something I’m actually known for.
My pantry isn’t neglected but my car garage could use a helper!

Can you share your black garlic recipe/purpose? My bestie gifted me some a while ago, and I haven’t used it for much so far.

Yes! Black garlic ideas would be much appreciated!

I have this version from Cost Plus too.

Sure! Took me a minute to locate the original post for this super simple fish prep but the black garlic really shines here.

Used the pink garlic on grilled zuke, onion and baby tri color peppers tonight and really enjoyed the aroma and taste. The powder is super fine and adheres well.

Also terrific on roasted Yukon potatoes and scrambled eggs.

I’ve been trying pre-made guacamole over the past few months. It was something I had completely avoided until then. None of it has been better than freshly made, but some have been better than others.

Herdez Traditional Mild tops my list, followed by Wholly Guacamole Extra Chunky and Wholly Guacamole Chunky. Herdez Traditional Spicy is next is my rankings (i don’t think much heat helps guac.) Sabra is a bit too lime-y for me. Good Foods Chunky isn’t especially lime-y but is still a bit too sour for me. Some Kroger and Walmart store brands (& varieties) are in the lower part of my list. They’re not inedible, just not very good. Wholly Guacamole Classic Mild is near the bottom. It has an off taste which I attribute to vinegar. It doesn’t taste of vinegar, but it just doesn’t taste right. Two major brands available to me locally that I haven’t tried are Cabo Fresh and Yucatan. Bell pepper (and/or vinegar) is listed as an ingredient in some of their varieties which doesn’t encourage me to try them, but I probably will eventually.

Surprisingly, even though I hate prepared guacamole generally, I find the Aldi classic in the big 15 oz. tub to be decent in a pinch, especially at lunch when my standards are lower. :joy:

Super spicy ramen. I used half the soup seasoning and substituted half a pack of Shin ramen seasoning for a more balanced flavor.

The noodles themselves are flavored with chili, which seems a little unnecessary.

This is interesting, because I’ve just started buying pre-made guac, also. I got it because it was BOGO so I figured, what-the-heck?.

I was kind of surprised that it was seriously decent. Not like home-made, but pretty good overall.

Other new items:

Soylent meal replacement shake products. My daughter asked for them and they were BOGO last week. I got 8 of the 4-packs of their Vanilla flavor and 4 of their 4-packs of Chocolate flavor. Then I went back on the last day of the BOGO sale and since they had no more of the Choco, I got a rain check for another 8 of the 4-packs of that. She doesn’t like the vanilla too much but if she blends in strawberries, then it’s okay.

She didn’t know the history of this company and the movie “Soylent Green”, so I got to educate her on it and she thinks it’s pretty funny.

Some of the stuff we get from H-Mart will blow the back of your head off. My son is very much a spicy food lover, but some packets we got called “Volcano Chicken” were so hot he can only eat a half of a bowl at one time. He sticks the other half in the fridge and rewarms it for his next go at it.

Me - I can only take about 3 scoops with my chopsticks of this crazy Volcano Chicken, and I’m done.

Excuse me - DONE with all caps. DONE.

Our Giant prepares fresh guac every day. It’s just about as good as mine, and even has a bit of a kick to it. It kinda blew my mind how good it was the first time I had it.

Doesn’t prepared guac turn brown quickly?

I’ve been buying the snack-pack TJs and Costco guac and freezing it (esp for travel) – pre-portioned and no waste / oxidation.
