After enduring an exhausting two weeks of expensive, gluttonous
Cantonese fine dining whilst entertaining guests from out-of-town. Tonight, at the request of my son and wife, who just returned from a week-long ‘ san Chinese food ‘ cruise of the Caribbean, we decided to head out to this neighbourhood Wok-Hay specialist for some unpretentious, well executed and tasty Cantonese grub!
Costing way less than half of what we paid per person at those higher end restaurants we just frequented……Orient Bistro, The One Fusion, Starchiva…etc. Our absolutely delightful and enjoyable meal tonight trumped literally every Cantonese meal we had in the former. This, despite exotic and rare ingredients being used in exorbitant dishes to elevate their pleasure and enjoyment level.
The wok-hay skill and execution of some of the stir-fried dishes tonight were spectacular and exceptional……the sauces sublime! And at the price the restaurant was charging!!..A REAL STEAL!
We ordered the following six main dishes to share amongst the five of us:
-
Stir-fried sliced beef with Chinese Kale ( aka Gai-Lan ) ( Long time favorite and humble dish to test the kitchen’s wok-hay skill. The result passed with flying colours! )
-
Pan fried Veal short ribs and onions with Teriyaki taste-alike sauce ( Perfectly seared and caramelized. Finger licking good! )
-
Stir-fried Pig’s stomach tips with pickled mustard greens and black bean sauce ( A rare find nowadays! Wow-worthy, irresistible and uber-tasty. )
-
Fried head-on prawns with salted duck egg yolk coating ( Beautiful and delectable rendition. Another lip smacking dish! )
-
Stir fried lotus root slices and house cured salted pork belly with fermented red bean curd ( Anaemic looking, a touch bland and under-seasoned but still passable. Only disappointment of the evening ) - Sorry, no photo!
-
Poached Chinese Mustard Greens, minced pork and julienne salt cured radishes in ‘ Shan Tong ‘ chicken broth ( Complex, savory and umami packed! A nice non-greasy way to prepare vegetables! ) - Sorry, again, forgot to take photo!
A great evening of great food, great conversation and great company!..Oh!..and great price too!
