Dean, I finally got around to using your photos. Many thanks! https://johntannersbbqblog.wordpress.com/2023/07/29/a-delicious-muffuletta-comes-to-the-washington-region/
I like your comment on how muffalettas get better with time., John. I used to make pan bagnat for picnics and it seemed like they got better with time too. Not only did the flavors blend better but the crusty bread got a mix of flavors and the cast iron pan had its way with the sandwich, crushing it down a bit more. I think that is the only purpose I have for the waxed paper in my cabinet.
ZivBnd – good point about pan bagnats. The flavors permeate the sandwich. That makes me want to get a pan bagnat. Where’s the best one near DC?
I tried to find one but the only place I found that made them was La Bohemia on Wilkins in Rockville, but they make them with mayo… Not the way I like them.
Mayonnaise?
Exactly. Whoever heard of a Pan Bagnat prepared with Mayonnaise? But that is what they say on their menu board. Definitely not the way I like them. In fact, I do not think it is a Pan Bagnat at all.
Not my photos.
So I really do not have a good place for one near DC.
Well, the bread looks good. The sandwich looks like a tuna salad with a few slices of hard boiled egg.
Wagshal’s offers a muffaletta, which I enjoyed, but I regret to report that it is served on a sub roll and not the round bread. Still good though.
What sort of crust on the roll? And texture of the bread?
By now the sandwich is a bit hazy in my memory, but I believe the roll was chewy, though not overly so, and not particularly crusty. In fact, here is a photo that I forgot to upload last time. I took a look to refresh my memory.
Lettuce? Lettuce!
Lots of lettuce! I’m surprised that Wagshal’s isn’t using better bread
A friend and I went to the Italian Store and split a muffuletta and an Italian sub (The Capri – prosciutto, Genoa salami, provolone cheese and spiced capicola ham). I’ll do a post on them, but came on disappointing soft rolls. the muffuletta roll was round and covered with sesame seeds, but it was basically a soft roll.
The other day I got an Italian sub from A. Litteri in the Union Market area — very satisfying.
Thanks! I keep forgetting about them.
