[Mottram St Andrew, Cheshire] Bull's Head 2025

In spite of the Bulls Head being a long time lunch favourite, this was our first visit this year. We’d booked because it does get busy and why wouldn’t you. And, yes, it was busy. Carrot, coriander and orange soup tasted nicely of all three. An open prawn sandwich came from the “light bites” section of the menu. It was dressed with Marie Rose sauce and there was a little rocket and cucumber salad for freshness. Side order of fries made it less “light bites” and more “proper lunch”. A duck, celeriac and thyme hash cake promised much but I then played “hunt the duck” with it. There’s a fried egg, some wilted kale and a red wine sauce. OK but not an edge of your seat starter. A Portobello mushroom, red pepper and halloumi burger promised an interesting veggie alternative to the chicken & beef burgers also on the menu. And the promise was kept although the harissa mayo needed a much bigger spice punch. Slaw was a tad different from the norm being lightly pickled. Nice. And fries were fries
