there are a few posters who have basically taken over HO and make it unappealing to others to provide content. Too many times a topic gets sidetracked, and it is never fixed. Several posters are sarcastic, snide, nasty, or just jerks

I have never seen a discussion board where this was not the case.

Well, to be honest, there are a few posters who have basically taken over HO and make it unappealing to others to provide content. Too many times a topic gets sidetracked, and it is never fixed. Several posters are sarcastic, snide, nasty, or just jerks. Others have to post on or about everything, even on topics they are obviously clueless about. And some have proved by their posts that they have such completely different tastes than I, that as soon as I see their name I move on without bothering to waste my time reading or posting.

HO does not successfully fill my needs due to lack of moderation and control, or lack of a clear vision of what it is.

I’d generally agree with a number of JMF’s points (not just the one I’ve quoted). Unfortunately the comments s/he makes are a fact of life with discussion boards, pretty much as they are in real life.

I contribute to another board (different subject entirely) - I joined on day 2 after it was formed over a decade ago. It’s nature has changed over the years, as has the contributor base - and generally, I don’t have the interest that I once had. I doubt I even open 5% of new posts, let alone read them. One of the great benefits that the operating system has (it works on Invision for the techies amongst you) is that you can “ignore” particular contributors which means you never see their posts. It’s really great when you have a small number of arsewipes who just irritate the hell out of you as soon as they start typing.

What I will say about HO (and I make comparisons with CH and the other board I mentioned) is that we seem remarkably free of arsewipes. There’s been a couple over the period (can’t recall their usernames) but, you know, shit happens. Maybe it’s that I don’t contribute to as many discussions here, so don’t come across the people JMF refers to - but we don’t seem to have the heated topics that seemed to attract arsewipes on CH, for instance.
