Mint Dosa [Southampton, England]

A South Indian restaurant in Southampton city centre. We’ve been here a few times before, mainly to take advantage of the breakfast buffet which at £10 a head is great value.

The place is usually very busy with mainly Indian families thronging the small buffet area. The service and set up is a bit Fawlty Towers but at those prices nobody is complaining.

The Pongal is well made but quite stodgy, so I only had a small amount. Upma is fragrant with ghee and curry leaves - I will usually have multiple helpings of this even though it’s quite heavy as well. There are mini utthapams and puris - not a huge fan of those fried items but I will have a few mini vadai as they are like savoury doughnut holes and made really well - crisp, fluffy, greaseless. Idli can be hit and miss - fresh and moist some days and a bit sad and stale on others. Sambar and chutneys good. I’m not a fan of the fluorescent orange carrot halwa. They will deliver freshly made small plain or masala dosas to your table on request.

Next time: the lunch buffet!

Nicely done on buffet maximization!

I’m mildly obsessed with Pongal at the moment after the temple gave it for prasad last week. Might have to make tonight.
