I needed to do an SFO pickup in April, and had a kappo meal beforehand at Hana Izumi in Millbrae. Husband was the chef and wife ran the front of the house. Overall, Hana Izumi served up some pretty nuanced flavors, with some highlights and some oddities. The wife was very hospitable. Overall, its an enjoyable meal.
Menu:
Amuse bouche: kobachi 3 ways. Sesame tofu with uni. Lots of unami from the uni. Soy sauce prepped with boiled sake and bonita. Duck with dijon mustard. Good dish, a little bitter. Tako/ octopus grilled.
Sashimi: Fatty bluefin/ yellowtail hamachi/ ocean trout.
Lean bluefin with yam and wasabi stem plus some pickled veg strong. Kinda overwhelmed the palate.
Scallop with dried fish egg typically eaten in the winter in Japan and Taiwan. Nice dish.
Red snapper sushi with sesame sauce. Hard to taste beyond the sesame.
Refresher: hamachi daikon salad, grilled yellow tail and daikon radish salad with ume plum ponzu sauce. Grilled yellowtail (with crunchy soba, plum sauce and radish with sliced cucumber. Sauce was strong. Hamachi was a bit too lean for the grilling though good with a little sauce.
Fried dish: Karei fish katsu: Flounder panko style with tartar sauce with dungeness crab. The flounder was on the bland side. The combo was a bit like, a fancy version of filet-o-fish. Pickled purple cabbage very nice and smooth.
Steamed dish: Chicken chawanmushi, steamed egg custard with sake steamed chicken. Mushroom plus chicken in a spicy broth. The yuzu kosho that was infused into the broth was the star here. The steamed egg custard was my favorite dish of the night. Savory and distinctive, even if the chicken was on the chewy side.
Entree: Tempura ochazuke (shrimp and scallop mixed kakiage tempura over rice with ochazuke tea broth on the side) with matcha powder. Really liked the tea flavor in the broth.
Sake for the meal:
Dessert: Matcha roll with red bean paste and some sauce. Whip cream. Mitchell’s mission hojicha roasted green tea ice cream and custard. Roll was a bit on the sweet side. Sauce was tart and balanced out the sweetness. Should eat the ice cream first since its less sweet. I liked the icecream even though its bought. Custard was mellow and less sweet. A bit hard to scoop out of the plate.
