Mi Tierra Foods, Berkeley

Several doors south of Middle East Market on San Pablo Avenue. Comprehensive latin supermarket. Great looking meats, produce,. Didn’t have/take time for shelf goods. Bought 5 pounds of prepared masa for tamales …on way out! Nice people. Bought fresh pasillas (reason for stop), Mexican chorizo, masa. Will return with a shopping list.

They were the first local store to have yeast, after the shortage. I’d made a habit of looking for yeast in every store I went to, and one day in early April the clerk said they had some behind the counter. One-pound boxes of instant yeast, cheaper than Amazon.

Thanks, Mi Tierra, for doing all the hard work. These simple tamales took probably a half hour from start to steamer. (Corn husks, which I had on hand, soaked for a half hour in very hot water.)
