I’ve been branching out from beer and wine. Have discovered a couple of great cideries in Uxbridge., Banjo and Slabtown. Always thought ciders were super sweet but I’ve tried oniy LCBO ones.
Now I’m curious about mead. I see that Circling Hawk in Richmond Hill sell several meads. Is dry mead super sweet?
As a long term patron and vendor at Renaissance ans Medieval faires across the eastern US, Ive had the opportunity to taste a lot of mead.
Best advice is to taste it for yourself.
I realise that Ive probably not tasted the finest meads available, but I have yet to find one that isnt extremely sweet, and its never my tipple of choice. (I generally drink cider at faire.l
I was going to chime in earlier, but the post seemed local to Ontario.
I’ve had mead many times at German xmas markets, and much prefer it over mulled wine. You can choose between hot or cold mead, and I’ve only ever had it hot.
As far as I can remember, it’s on the sweeter side — given that the base is honey perhaps that’s not a surprise.
Thank you! I expect sweetness but hoping it wouldn’t be like super sweet like ice wine. I will definitely try to sample next time I’m at the honey farm.
I’ve definitely had meads that were on the drier side, and I’m hoping that the mead I bought in Denmark this summer is one of them. If you ever make it out to the SF Bay Area, I recommend visiting Heidrun Meadery up in Point Reyes.
Great advice! I had some gawd awful mead at a ren faire decades ago.
I sure do miss the ‘old school’ ren faires of yore. I frequented the Novato RPF for many years and the Dickens Faire, also.
