I think what’s most interesting about your follow up graph is 2 of the current top 3 didn’t exist. Now Burger King, previously #2 is now 6th. They must have lost 50% of their market share over that period of time while Mc D’s has remained in the top spot. I guess that marketing team of psychologists paid off.
Truthfully while I know McDonald’s has lost some market share themselves that still an impressive record for management to have been able to maintain that dominance for so long.
Kudos to Starbucks, while I can’t stand their products you can’t argue their success. Chik-fi-a not to get into “politics” their product quality is far superior and their continued growth is going to be interesting to continue to watch.
We have a friend with a fast food habit who now will not consider Chick-fil-a when a McDonald’s Deluxe Crispy chicken sandwich can be had. Given the size of the MCD market blanket, no more Chick-fil-a for him.
Yeah… I think I’ve tried every brand at the Safeway and nothing comes close. I thought about making my own but that is a lotta work for a junk food fish sandwich. (c;
Thanks! The only problem with these is that you end up with essentially a fried egg. You need water/steam to get the height and the poach-like texture. McD’s use a ringed grill pan with a surrounding steam tray and cover. TTBOMK they are grilled until just set, then the yolk is knifed with a spatula, and they are finished covered, with water added to the tray through a little funnel type opening in the lid.
I use a non-stick pan with a silicon egg ring and a glass lid. I’ve come close but have yet to totally nail the temp and timing. Not sure but think a greased, metal egg ring would work better than the insulative property of the silicon ring.
One option for the filet-o-fish is to see if one of the franchises will sell you a case.
If you wanted to make something similar at home:
As for the egg Mcmuffin, we like it.
The egg does get some steam from the heat of the appliance but not the egg height as the ones from McDonalds.
A metal ring would be more sturdy and create the heat that you need to steam. So you are right metal would be the way to go.
My son had a tour of McDonald’s and made a hamburger.
Wonder if one could do that with a filet-o-fish and pick up some cooking tips and tricks?
Eta:
Or even making an the egg Mcmuffin to see the process exactly and try to replicate that at home?
As Chemicalkinetics pointed out, they are successful because they’re a real estate company.
They also have a crack PR team for spin, reputation washing, and deflect/divert/deny strategies.
It’s a truly nasty corporation that relies on a disposable convenience centred society that gives lip service to environmental and social concerns without actually doing much to improve things.
Rainforest burning? Aww, that’s so sad, and it makes me so angry! Boy, do I feel like a burger! Labour abuses? Terrible! Gimme another one of those fries. Toxic ingredients not just in the food, but in the packaging? Well, hell, I don’t want to get my car greasy! Pass me that chicken nugget.
That real McD’s flavour that you’re craving? Courtesy of a company called International Flavors and Fragrances.
The newest news about their packaging? Look up PFAS.
After learning from an inside source what the operation is like, I stopped supporting them.
For drinks. And we didn’t eat the burger but saw it advertised on the store windows. Have you noticed when you travel that there is a McDs on just about every street?
And hostile is a strong word. If I’m hostile to anything, it’s a certain way of raising beef cattle. McDs’s business model is to charge as absolutely little as possible so they have to buy the absolute cheapest ingredients. But they’re not the reason that CAFOs exist.
Looked at from a business perspective, they’re still well positioned. They’ve pushed all the right buttons–and they’ve handled Covid 19 about as well as one could.
It’s the kind of business model I urge graduate students to study.
From a food culture and health perspective, they’re a castastrophe. In terms of national social culture, what they represent may even be worse, long term.
I just prepared a simple breakfast: two eggs scrambled, English muffin with jam, fruit, and one cup Moccamaster Colombian supremo–with mug, plate, and silverware.
@Google_Gourmet They hid the “moon” with that piece of bacon/ham. They should have just stuck that on between the egg and the patty.
I’m more curious if US patrons understand or relate to this adult happy meal thing that recently launched. It’s just a happy meal with an adult sandwich vs the hamburger/cheeseburger. And that toy they include… Why do they think we’re nostalgic for 4-eyed mutant figures??
Some locations are much better than others.
I didn’t eat fast food from Feb 28/2020 until Feb 2022.
I had a McD’s Quarter Pounder with cheese in April and it hit the spot. I also tried the jalapeño and Bacon Egg McMuffin 3 weeks ago, and that was pretty good for a limited time special, but I prfeeea regular bacon Egg McMuffin.
I had an order of nuggets in May or June, when the my local pub’s kitchen had closed already. There’s a 24 h McD’s 3 blocks from my apartment. Since the pandemic has affected the restaurant industry in Toronto, and short staff and less customers continues to be an issue, many restaurants and pubs near me have reduced hours they are open for food, making it difficult to get takeout after 9:20 pm on a Saturday night. Some restaurants that once offered takeout are now not doing takeouts because they’d rather have customers dine inside. I sometimes end up at McD’s when nothing else is open.
I tend to give more business to Wendy’s and Harvey’s (a Canadian chain) but I’m happy McDonalds is an option.
McD’s & Burger King are also great place to stop for a pretty clean bathroom when visiting the UK and continental Europe, when public bathrooms can be hard to find. Sometimes I buy a drink or order something small since I feel that’s fair if I’m using their other facilities.
Some Mcd’s offer a qp with cheese deluxe, this adds lettuce, tomato, (onions?) and mayo. If you ask, they will hold the mayo and ketchup and add Big Mac sauce. Perfect if you can’t decide on a qp or Big Mac and really good. They should put it on the menu but I guess they don’t want cannibalise sales of Big Macs. Fwiw, the new kiosks allow customization but does not offer Big Mac sauce, so you still need to ask a living person.
.
I ended up visiting McD’s yesterday, on my 11 hour drive home . I had a Filet O’Fish, customized to have no cheese and no tartar sauce since I was avoiding extra salt. Hit the spot.
I didn’t realize the computer terminal ordering system allowed so much customization until yesterday. I ordered extra cinnamon for my pumpkin spice latte.
On the rare occasions I’m at McD’s, I order a filet-o-fish with Big Mac sauce as the only topping. I don’t actually know how much sodium is in the sauce but to me, it tastes less salty than their mayo and tartar sauces.
I like McDonalds. I don’t eat it often .Big Mac with cheese burger . Not really a fan of their fry’s anymore.
Fills a void for. a extremely long time .
