Ha! We haven’t actually had any McDonald’s this trip - just eyeing up the menu. :joy:

Having worked a few years in Switzerland we found it actually surprisingly difficult to find really good restaurant food in our area (Basel which is perhaps the most “multikulti” city in CH). There are obvious still good places but compared to many countries, including Germany, France etc. we found the “density” of good places surprisingly low (independently of the cost)

I’ve only visited twice — Lugano & Murten, respectively, and I don’t recall the food being memorable.

I’ve only been twice, once to Lugano with my parents I know we ate outdoors and it was beautiful, but I have zero recollection of the food. I flunk the foodie test.

Late reply, but I’ve seen double FoF meals where I am, but not one I take up very often, even though it’s my go to as well. I live in an area with a high Asian population, and lots of Chinese people, and the FoF is very popular, especially with older generation Chinese. We see these pop up, and the McDs that used to be located in our Chinatown area in Boston always had FoF specials. And perhaps why Vancouver had them too :grin:

I’m guessing a good sandwich at a Swiss-run, non-chain restaurant is costing close to $25-$30 CAD these days.

Everything seems to cost 1.5 to 2 times more in Switzerland, compared to Canada, Italy, Germany, the UK, or Austria, whenever I’ve visited over the past 20 years.

My Swiss cousins always vacation outside Switzerland because a staycation is way too expensive for their family of 5.

I regret being such a stickler, avoiding meals at McD’s, Wendy’s and whatnot in Europe and Asia. I never tried any fast food because I was so focused on local and regional non-chain food. Now that I’m barely travelling abroad, I wish I had ordered more McD’s. Not a lot. Just some regional McD’s stuff.

I did take a few photos of offerings on the fast food menus on my trips to Rome, Tokyo, and Chamonix.

In the end, it is still Cafo meat and overall quality you can easily get better at independent restaurants close by for an often not that much more expensive price.

While I never actively seek them out, I’ve had Micky D’s in Amsterdam(possibly high and we could have beer with it), Barcelona(after a fantastic flamenco concert, it was late and raining and magically appeared out of nowhere) and Lisbon(for science and pre pastel de nata). no regerts here :smiley:

On our first trip ever together, my PIC and I went to a KFC in Prague after we arrived by train :face_with_peeking_eye:. We were starving, too.

I think that was also my first visit to a KFC. July 2001.

I remember pulling into a train station on a rainy Sunday somewhere in Germany and wolfing down a couple of slices of Pizza Hut pizza.

It was the mid 90s ans we weren’t near a city, so options were extremely limited.

I remember it was good, and the first time I’d ever had corn on pizza.

When my boo and I were first dating in Berlin, we’d often order a personal pan pizza from the Pizza Hut on his street. It was actually quite good. Wings sucked, tho :slight_smile:

Read an interesting quote from a past McD exec recently - McD’s isn’t a restaurant or food business, but a real estate business… they make their money from the rent they charge their franchises, and burgers and coffee is the easiest for them.

Anyways, this is a double venison burger with mozzarella, chorizo, and a caramelised onion and pomegranate relish.

Given that the thread title is McDonald’s in General, and any number of regional varieties have come up, I think my question was warranted :woman_shrugging:

Although pomegranate relish is probably pushing it beyond anything they’d come up with.

A lot of corporate supermarket chains are also in the real estate and development business.

When former Safeway CEO, Peter Magowan, became managing partner of the SF Giants. He headed up building the new stadium near China Basin. The city of SF flatly said, no public funding but cut a deal of $1 or so a year lease…plus longterm development rights to the surrounding areas in Mission Bay. He probably peed his pants…the Giants built the ballpark for $350 mil…but got development right worth quite a bit more, 28 acres near Mission Bay. I have no idea how much that’s worth but I’d guess at least a few billion or more today. As Safeway CEO, he clearly understood real estate.
