Tots and pears
I don’t like tots either
Sashimi!
I had no idea hash browns had been around in America since the early 1800s.
I would think that they were springing up across Europe once the masses were growing and eating potatoes. Variations on the Rosti and potato pancake are common across all of Scandinavia and Eastern Europe. The Koreans make a potato pancake, too. I’m guessing that idea was contemporaneous in several places at once!

The region that is present day Germany started growing potatoes in the 1620s. I’m guessing Switzerland started growing potatoes sometime after that.
Boxty were invented by the late 18th C.
Llapingachos, Ecuadorian potato and cheese pancakes exist, too. I am not sure when they were invented.
Interestingly, the potato cake from Peru is Causa, a mashed potato cake rather than a fried potato pancake.
I hadnt put all the thoughts in the same basket, but these track with my own family history.
Many if my ancestors arrived from Canton Berne jn the 1830s, and it makes sense that they would cook the dishes they knew…
Half my family arrived from Eastern Europe around a century ago. That part of my family is more into Pierogi Making than Rosti/ Potato Pancakes! I think that’s because it was easier to be boiling pierogis than frying potato pancakes on the Prairie, and oil was more expensive and harder to come by, than water.
I decided to take a look at the offerings in Poland
Now that I’m not travelling abroad anymore, I’ve been more curious about the menus at overseas McDonald’s. I used to intentionally avoid ordering multinational fast food while traveling when I did travel. LOL
They used to be (til some time in the 90’s, I think) fried in beef tallow.
There’s been some particular stupid noises about the current US FDA proclaiming it to be healthier than vegetable oil (which it absolutely isn’t unless you’re talking about those artificially saturated fats that have been essentially banned in most places).
Ah, yes. The seed oil hysteria.
Im becoming convinced that the only healthy diet is to stop eating.
I can’t remember (or find!) it but theres a quote about having read so much about the foods that are bad for us that I think I’ll just give up reading.
becoming increasingly convinced hemp oil is my favourite
For the record:
My standard MickyDee’s order is a FoF, NO TARTAR SAUCE, fries (free on the app w/ a FoF) and a frozen coke. I’ve never liked tartar sauce. I deeply dislike pickles, and that makes most tartar sauces condimentum non grata. I am also not generally a burger lover (again, super picky eater childhood), so the FoF was the default for me for years. If nuggets had been available back in the early 70’s, I might not have the love for FoF that I carry to this day.
For 2 years, while living in Vancouver, BC, I could use the in-person kiosks to add a 2nd patty to the FoF. Heck, they even OFFERED A DOUBLE FoF MEAL! Now back in the states, the option disappeared on the kiosks, and I don’t think has ever been available on the app.
I am an admirer of nuggests. From a purely engineering perspective, they are a remarkable achievement. The coating has nearly mathematically designed ridges designed for crispiness and sauce retention. They’re a blank slate for whatever sauce you’ve got.
And here’s the next big question: What’s your nugget sauce? I am lucky enough that the franchisers in my region DO get the “Hot Mustard”, which is always an excellent choice. I’m not a BBQ type. If sweet and sour or the “schezuan” sauce is available, I’ll probably get one of those. Currently, McD’s is promoting new “chicken crispers”, another in a long line of “non-nugget nuggets”. The new sauce to go with them is “creamy chili”. It’s somewhere between a very very mild sriracha mayo and a tinge of ‘thai sweet chili’, with a big hit of black pepper. I give it a thumbs up, being zippy enough without being “spicy”.
Honey oil is a favourite of mine.
Maybe in the Great White North, but down here we are left with the paltry choice of zero (0) or one (1) fish patty per sandwich.
This is cuz of those 51st state jokes, isn’t it?
Might have to pick one of those up soon
I’m Canada adjacent at the moment (in northern MI on vacation) and the double is available here. I’m pretty sure it’s available in NY as well. It’s listed as a separate menu item from the single (you can’t just add a patty to the single, you have to select the double as a different sandwich), but I’ve seen it everywhere I opened the app recently.
Nope. Not here in California.
I’ll have occasion to check southern Oregon this weekend, but hopefully, I’ll have better choices for meals than McD’s.
Not sure where Rally/Checkers exists…but not gonna lie, their fish sandwich is a sleeper. Thick filets with a crunchy breading, AND a double is a standard menu item.
Yeah. It is available in the United States but only at “participating restaurants.”
California is still being punished for telling Mickey D to stop putting toys in kid’s meals. That’s why we can’t have nice things.
Phoenix, Medford, and Central Point have McD’s.
Ashland protested ours till the franchisee packed up and left. Everyone congratulated themselves and of course the building became a bank because of the drive-thru which our city council put a cap on the number in town.
Good intentions, double bad outcome.
