McDonald’s [Lexington MA]

Nice one!

For the record, I, too, only visit McD’s on April Fools Day during years when a total solar eclipse occurs in New England. :joy:

I used to get my very first cat a wee McD’s hamburger as a treat when she finished a vet appointment nearby. Being a cat, she only had a little bit of the patty. No bun, no condiments. I scraped them off.

My housemate in Palo Alto, Calif., decades ago had an outdoor cat who loved to roam the neighborhood. One day he walked past the Jack-in-the-box drive through and saw his cat sitting on the the top of the speaker box. As he watched incredulously, his cat jumped on the car roof and rode on there to the pick up window. then reached down and graciously accepted a couple of french fries. Then she hopped down and went back to the speak box and did it again.

They are smarter than we are. That’s why we work and they don’t.

She loved shellfish the most. One night I was cooking cioppino with several kinds of shellfish. She came out of her open second floor bathroom window, walked across the roof of my one-story small in-law apartment, climbed down a tree, and started scratching furiously at my door.

Obviously I had to give her some shrimp and crab to try. And that’s when I found out that canned people crab was her most favorite treat of all. Her humans said it was fine to give to her occasionally. A can would last about 3 days of small treats. She would come in and stare at my refrigerator. She was satisfied it was gone if I showed her the empty can.

Yes, smart cat.

Sometimes I get duped on a road trip when hitting the drive thru for my kids. When the fries are hot and salted well, they are delicious. The food tastes familiar and good going down, but I usually feel terrible afterward.

If I could do this with my dearly departed first kitty, your Pup is surely worthy of the treat!! I won’t tell anyone!

We’re heading up to Stowe on Friday to join in the eclipse mass hysteria. Who knows, out of desperation, we may need to hit up a McDonald’s for Spring Onion (he’ll be psyched). Our neighbors have a place up there which they rent out. They were there this past weekend and told us that the hysteria has already begun. We’ve been warned.

Easiest McDonalds heading up that way are in Warner, NH (exit 9) and Randolph, VT (exit 4).

As far as food, there is a lot of overpriced mediocre food in Stowe. A few recommendations in the general area I can throw at you:

North County Donuts (Morrisville). I’m not usually a donut guy, but these are excellent. I am particularly partial to the maple glazed. They do sell out but you can order in advance online. The donut holes are in store if available when you pick up only though.

Ranch Camp (Stowe). Fresh food at a fair price. Good burritos, salads, etc. My kids like the pork belly tacos.

Red Hen Baking (Middlesex). Great place to grab a sandwich on the way in or out. Their jamon buerre is excellent. They have a nice bottle shop next door as well.

Canteen Creemee (Waitsfield). Best Maple Creemee around, a VT delicacy.

Black Diamond BBQ (Morrisville)

Hill Farmstead Brewery (Greensboro). If you like beer it is absolutely worth the trip. However, it is in the sticks and the roads might be dicey (muddy and rutted) in the wake of the incoming storm.

Apres (Stowe) Located in Mirror Mirror spa. Really top notch cocktails and hospitality.

I was up in that area this past weekend and it was relatively quiet, but I expect it will be a zoo on Monday. You should be able to at least move around before then. Depending where your neighbor’s place is and if they have a clear view SW, I’d hunker down there and stay off the roads on Monday. They (local authorities) really don’t seem to have a plan or know what to expect. It could really be a mess driving anywhere. Current forecast is for clear skies (fingers crossed), but that will also attract more people to northern New England from other areas which are forecast to be overcast.

You can request a “round egg” when you order which will get you a fresh cooked egg which I believe they only use in the McMuffin otherwise.

Canned salmon here elicits an enthusiastic response from both kitties.

Morally or digestively?

That is good to know, thank you! I hate the fake eggs in the biscuits but would love one with a real, freshly cooked egg!

I just went out for my midday walk and ran into my neighbor; while we were standing in the hail, she sent me a bunch of places to check out in Stowe. Terribly underdressed, I came back inside. She and her wife (and their 3-year old) definitely have better taste in food than we do; among her recommendations were (like @uni) Apres and Ranch Camp but also places like Edson Hill and Plate. Other places on her list were Cork, Aladdin, Blackcap Cafe, Butler’s Pantry, Woodland Coffeeshop, Doc Pond, and von Trapp. The weather promises to clear up by Monday - I’m getting excited! I’ll make a new post about where we end up this weekend. McDonald’s WILL NOT amongst that list.

ETA: We’re not staying at their place. That got rented out long before we decided to join in the eclipse mania. We’re staying at a cool-looking Airbnb about 5 minutes SE of town proper.

Edson Hill has good food, and an absolutely cozy and spectacular atmosphere. I prefer eating downstairs in the bar, but the dining room is nice as well. They have a good fancy burger. Great cocktails, great service in a really special setting.

Plate is a long time favorite. Their veggie burger is the best I have ever had anywhere, and their cocktails are quite good. Another great place to dine at the bar. Unfortunately we have not been there much recently. Shrinkflation has hit them rather hard. We dined there earlier this winter and our mussels appetizer had six (6) mussels on the plate ( I was borderline offended.). The tuna tartar was barely enough to offer everyone a taste. The apps are more amuse size.

Aladdin is OK middle eastern take out. It’s worth noting that they are completely vegetarian; no kebab or shawarma.

Enjoy your trip. Happy to answer any ?s you may have about the area.

it’s not a fake egg — it’s just scrambled, not fried.
