Mattina - San Francisco (Lower Pacific Heights)

SPQR is a well established restaurant in San Francisco for close to 20 years. More recently owner/chef Accarrino also open just around the corner Mattina https://www.mattinasf.com/ - a full day restaurant with lunch, cafe and dinner options. It is more of a neighborhood restaurant than SPQR but still has the focus on high quality dishes, e.g. pasta made in-house, spiedini etc. Our first visit was very good and it is a bit surprising that the restaurant seems to fly a bit under the radar compared to some other Italian places in the city

We were at Mattina a few weeks ago for a Sunday lunch. We had:

the beet salad:

the octopus, which was not pictured.

the bucatini, with spicy tomato, 'nduja and black pepper pecorino:

the box cut spaghetti with kale pesto, roasted almond, stracciatella and cheddar

the tagliatelle, with marsala mushroom and truffled pecorino.

The saucing was good for all of them. I especially liked the kale pesto one. Oddly, they overcooked the pasta for all three. Not sure why. Perhaps Sunday brunch is a light shift for them since it wasn’t busy that day.

Good visit to Mattina https://www.mattinasf.com and trying out a number of their dishes. Overall good flavors with perhaps the piadina the weakest dish as the dough felt more like a pizza dough and less like piadina.
