Marron glace

Where can I currently find it in Manhattan? TIA!

When in doubt, ask Google’s AI. Here was its answer:

“In Manhattan, you can find marron glacé at specialty food stores and French patisseries. Your options range from gourmet markets carrying pre-packaged boxes to high-end chocolatiers that sell them individually.”

More seriously, are you looking for joints that candy their own, or ones that sell boxed product. Of the latter there are several, and I believe you can order them from anywhere, including Manhattan. See

Thanks, I’m looking for shops in the city as opposed to mail order. Which ones currently sell Marron glace?

What @fooddabbler seems to have been saying is that no NYC-based confectioners are preparing glazed chestnuts inside the city limits. However, La Maison du Chocolat has a half-dozen retail shops in Manhattan and Brooklyn where you should be able to buy them by walking in if not by ordering online.

I know exactly why, and why they’re so expensive. They are EXTREMELY labor-intensive and time-consuming to make. After much experimenting and help from a chocolatier, I managed to make them. Around this time every year I wonder if I should make them, then immediately dismiss the idea.

Greek marrons glacé are usually quite a bit cheaper than French or Italian ones, if anyone is looking for a deal.

I suspect the cheaper price is mostly due to cheaper labour and ingredients in Greece, relative to France and Italy.

Available at Serano Bakery on Pape in Toronto.

I would think some Greek bakeries and grocery stores in Astoria, Queens also sell the Greek ones.

One magical Christmas my SIL who used to live in Geneva got me 3kg of them, the best I’ve had so far (from Confiserie Rohr, in case anyone is traveling there). I hate to think of how much they cost, considering they were Swiss-made.

Does anyone remember the marron glace thread on Chowhound? Not sure if that is what it was called.

I think I started it, called “Making marrons glacés”. I detailed all the trouble I had.

There was one contributor to the thread, called “trewq”, with whom I exchanged a lot of banter. Wish they were here!

Teuscher and Eataly have them in season, and I believe I’ve seen them at Zabars too.

There’s also an italian market on 9th called Buon Italia that usually carries them.
