[MANHATTAN] Avoiding Congestion Zone for Weekend Lunch

As a brooklynite I never really ventured above 34th St to eat, let alone “uptown,” but now I’m meeting a friend for Saturday late lunch (at 2) who wishes to avoid the congestion zone. Casual atmosphere and good food preferred, any cuisine considered. Prob not anyplace that requires a reservation.

Where should we go?

Maybe the revamped Lungi?

Cafe d’Alsace, 2nd Ave. near 88th St.

Jacob’s is great. Love their Okra and Chiles dish.

Really glad they survived the pandemic

Cafe d’Alsace it was. Thanks.

Afterward I walked a bit to stretch my legs, and found myself at Schaller-Weber, where I snatched up a bunch of discounted (but not expired) German Christmas cookies, and then across the street at Budapest Cafe I bought a very tasty treat of apple strudel.

Glad you went to Cafe d’Alsace. I presume that’s a photo of your brunch. Looks delicious. Also nice that you were able pick up some food items in the neighborhood.

sorry I missed this, cafe d’alsace is our default place for out-of-town guests. Another good choice is touring the Nueu Galerie followed by a meal at their restaurant, cafe sabarsky, but it can be hard to get a reservation at sabarsky. the art is stunning and the food, while not stunning, is very good and their Viennese desserts are incredible.

I was floored at the volume level at d’Alsace. We had to scream across the table.

surprising, we haven’t had that problem, maybe it’s dependent on how busy they are and where they seat you,

Baeckeoffe? If so, it looks good, and the mustard looks like the perfect complement. I have never had it and had to look it up. Does it normally come with a croissant or crusty bread?

Petite choucroute garnie.

it’s also a good place to sit at the bar with a friend during happy hour and eat one of their fabulous burgers.
