Making Lebkuchen at home

I am a big fan and have never been too happy with what I can buy in stores. So last year I decided to make my own. It was very hard finding a recipe I liked but finally came up with one and they turned out tasty but not great, so this year I am going to give it another try.

Has anyone made their own and if so, did you grind your own nuts or use ground nut flours? I used a combination of hazelnuts, almonds and walnuts that I ground myself. Some had been roasted but then I got lazy and the rest were not. The end result was very damp and the cookies did not hold their shape that well. So I thought that this time I would try almond and hazelnut flour that had been milled (I ground mine in a food processor) Any thoughts or advice is greatly appreciated!
