Thank you! I’ve been to all these places and they’re great. Franny’s is always a little less interesting/tasty than I hope for -
THANK YOU @GretchenS ! I take Rt 1 the whole way - maybe I’ll stop at Dorman’s dairy dream?? It’s amazing
If only Francine’s could return.
We loved Francine’s!!
Have you’ve been to Helen’s in Machaias?
Just coming her to mention Atlantic Baking Company. Best blueberry pie ever. Order a day in advance for pickup the next day, otherwise, they run out.
reporting back! I had such a great 28 hour trip to Maine! Stopped at Fika on way up - closed. Stopped at Zu Bakery- they were mostly sold out of everything but I had a brownie (they won a James Beard award this year). Parked right near Std Baking Company and got some madeleines (my kids’ favorite), cookies, and morning bun. Super hot in Portland - I contemplated walking to Bite into Maine but couldn’t do it so walked to East Ender where I had a delightful (solo!) meal of a lobster sandwich with butter on a toasted brioche roll. Honeypaw soft serve (legitimately the best ever) for dessert. Folly 101 for really fun and reasonably priced home goods.
Drove north on Rt 1, stopping in Wiscasset for some shopping, and had a solo dinner at Nina June - very good. Excellent zucchini chips with a dill yogurt sauce, beet risotto, and caramel gelato. I really wanted the riccotta pasta, which was advertised on IG as having cauliflower as an ingredient but it turned out that it also had (non-advertised) pork in it, which I don’t eat, and they couldn’t exclude. Seems weird at this point in time not to have more veggie pasta offerings?
Picked up my 12 yo at camp the next day, and she was delighted by the madeleines (her favorite). Stopped at Off Track Pizza on Exchange St for lunch - highly recommend. I loved my mushroom truffle pizza! Was planning on getting more Honeypaw soft serve, but we were wiped and drove home. oh - did stop at Zu Bakery again and this time they had a baguette and focaccia. Both were good but honestly not as good as some Boston bakeries - Belleville wasn’t open when I was in Portland and that remains my favorite of the Portland bakeries.
Lots of great eating in your 28 hour trip. Wow!
@tomatotomato - I know! I knew it was fun but didn’t quite realize how extensive it was until I typed it up! I’d love to move to Maine -
But would you be able to handle winter there?
Yup. Attended college in Maine and loved it. Way better than midwestern winters which are so gray (for me, at least).
Great short trip!
I wonder what is your favorite Boston area bakery for baguettes, which my husband buys all the time. His favorite is from the Michette new-ish French bakery near our home in Somerville. He also likes the Prb Boulangerie in Somerville. He often buys Iggy’s baguette from Whole Foods. Clear Flour is too far from us and we haven’t tried Colette yet.
Here are 2 articles about the winners of the Grand Prix competition recently sponsored by the Elmendorf baking shop in Cambridge.
By the way, if you come to Cambridge, stop by Momma’s near Porter Square on Mass. Ave. I almost never eat ice cream, and I usually stay away from maple in desserts (so often too sweet for me). But the Momma’s maple soft serve is amazing! I’m not sure it’s mentioned on their website. I signed up for the newsletter so I know they are serving it every day for the rest of the summer.
Momma’s also has Breadboard baguettes on Wednesdays (although breadboard is on vacation till August 2).
@Madrid- I’ve been DYING to go to Mommas! We should go today as a field trip!
I love clear flour the most - sometimes our WF will sell it - we also love Iggy’s. I haven’t tried Breadboard but I really want to -
Nice work!
@sallyt for next summer’s trip you may want to consider The Causeway restaurant (variously described as being in St George or Spruce Head). For some reason it’s never front and center in my mind, but the lovely folks from whom I rent in the summer on Sprucehead Island take me there every year (we just went) and it’s always wonderful. She has celiac and is understandably nervous about eating out but they take great care of her and have a number of interesting vegan offerings. Gorgeous views too.
Just checked out their website - it looks wonderful!
