Louisville, Kentucky

Just spent a few days here and was impressed by the food. Here are a few highlights–

Mayan Cafe for an excellent fine-dining experience. We had the watermelon salad, fish special (halibut), and papadzules. Presentation was lovely, flavors nicely balanced, including some I hadn’t had before (the pipian verde on the papadzules). Minorly disappointed with the Mexican tiramisu, only because it was more like a double layer tres leches cake and not really a tiramisu in texture.

Hammerheads for outstanding pub grub. This is a house basement converted to a bar/restaurant, only open for dinner. Tender brisket sliders, soft shelled crab sliders, and truffle fries with sage mayo. Those fries might just be the best fries I’ve ever had. The brisket puts a lot of BBQ places to shame.

Other notables-- Jimmy Can’t Dance for a classic jazz bar with lots of atmosphere and Neat Bourbon Bar for spot on bourbon cocktails and chill atmosphere (low lighting and velvet couches). I also really enjoyed Bayt Al mocha mocha house for all things Dubai chocolate and their pistachio cake. And best breakfast went to Wiltshire Pantry Bakery and Cafe in the Highlands for their sourdough everything bagel with lox.

I’ll be heading back to Louisville in a few months, so if there are any other recs, I’d love to hear them!

Just returned from a quick 18 hour trip to Louisville. Sadly, it was for a funeral so I wasn’t in the mood for much research. Since I was staying at the Brown Hotel and got in famished, I had their legendary Hot Brown for dinner (and was still full the next morning, I’ll add). There is no gluten-free option, which seems oh-so-1926 in keeping with the general feel of the Grand Old Hotel and the roaring 20’s invention of the famed sandwich, so I just ate everything off the toast points as I luckily am only mildly gluten intolerant. I will say it was one of the top 5 sandwich experiences of my life, melancholy live piano player, stiff drink, funeral program and all. If you need comfort, this is your food.

I am sorry for your loss. Staying at the brown and having a hot brown is I of life’s greatest joys.

Oh geez. I didn’t see your post and I just posted a similarly sad report. Hope spring brings better times.
