The visit to Locanda Perbellini https://locandaperbellini.it/ was unfortunately a first disappointment here in Milan. The food was overall good but the service was just plain horrible. We haven’t experienced such a rushed service anywhere, including the US, in a very long time. It was obvious that there was little interest to create a relaxed ambience, e.g. it doesn’t help if somebody always looks around the corner every 30 seconds to see if you are done with your dish, no breaks within courses etc. Overall not a restaurant we would recommend - there are too many good options in Milan.
Sorry you experienced this. Rushed service is particularly un-Italian (in my experience). The meal does look delicious though. Look forward to more of your reports.
Completely agree which made it so unusual and disappointing - and the restaurant isn’t really in a very touristy street/area where you might experience it
I notice from online reviews that they have two seatings in the evening that could do it…but the food looks very appetizing, basically traditional dishes with an updated presentation.
maybe they dont formally have two seatings for purposes of reservations, but it sounds like they are achieving the same thing by rushing people through their meals
I don’t think they are trying to time any seatings but just want to turn over tables asap (which was also odd as the restaurant wasn’t anywhere near full capacity during our time in the restaurant)
In general, people in Milan tend to be less friendly than what I have experienced in other parts of Italy, not only in restaurants but also in shops, taxi drivers, on the streets etc.
That is the reputation of the Milanese, but boy do those photos look good! I’ve not seen Vitello tonnato in years since I’m mostly in the south, but that photo gave me a real hankering to try.
My love affair with that dish goes back so far that we even served it at my (first!) wedding!! but after that I think I’ve had it only once, at Trattoria della Posta in Piemonte.
I had the dish just recently at Ristorante Antico Brolo in GardoneRiviera, but I did not recognize it from a distance - my memory of vitello tonnato was of large slices of cold veal with a copious sauce of tuna spread over. But here it is now (not my pic - I forgot to photograph our dish). much closer to a carpaccio in appearance, with dabs of tuna cream and garnishes Delicious.
