Feel a bit guilty having gone to Locale over the weekend with @NotJrvedivici 's Family Tavola just across the train station parking lot. A table popped up in my Resy app as available on Saturday night and grabbed it. This was my first visit and it was good. We were seated at a high top for two on the outside patio. I was concerned that it would be too warm, but we were in the shade and fans were set up. To start, they serve complimentary bread with a whipped ricotta which was delicious. For an app we ordered the panzanella burrata which was reminiscent of a panzanella we had in Amalfi. Next we shared a clam pie which was good and even better after we requested some lemon to squeeze on top. For mains we ordered pastas - an exemplary cacio e pepe and for her something in a spicy red sauce which I did not taste. I will be returning to try one of the largest chicken parm entrees I’ve seen. A couple of well made negronis made for a nice meal. Passed on a special key lime pie dessert (which looked great at a neighboring table) to hit up Nicholas Creamery. Do not pass on the Not Cherry Garcia while it is in season. By the look of the crowd on a Saturday night, Locale is doing something right.

As a reminder, we are still not doing indoor restaurant dining. Therefore, when @jsfein mentioned that Locale has outdoor seating, I put it on our “go to” list. This despite the fact that we already have several Italian spots with outdoor tables on our regular dining rotation. But the truth is, there are not exactly a boatload of restaurants of any type with outdoor tables close to us or a reasonable drive away. So we figured we should try it to see how it stacks up against the other Italians.

We went to Locale last week for a mid-afternoon lunch. We were surprised and pleased at how pleasant the outside space was though there was one thing that could be a problem. There are only two regular tables with regular chairs. The rest are high tops and long picnic-style, neither of which would be comfortable for us. We easily got one of the regular table (each seats 4) since we were there mid-week arriving around 3 p.m., and the outdoor space was pretty empty. Just two women seated at a high top and several people occupying one of the picnic tables.

We started by sharing the Eggplant Tower, stacked Fried Eggplant, Whipped Ricotta, and Sundried Peppers. It was tasty but not as good as a somewhat similar appetizer we recently had at another spot (fried eggplant, burrata, and heirloom tomatoes not stacked).

For mains, I chose Branzino All’Acqua Pazza with Cherry Tomatoes, Sautéed Garlic, and Vino Bianco Sauce, while Mr. R. opted for the Ribeye with Long Hot Peppers. As there were no additional accompaniments, he added a side of Escarole and Beans. which came with two large slices of garlic bread.

The branzino was one huge filet smothered with tomatoes and a surprise not mentioned on the menu, two kinds potatoes – fingerlings and purple – plus plenty of sauced. Though this was good, again, I prefer the branzino with a totaly different preparation that I’ve had many times at one of the other Italians we frequent.

The steak was prepared exactly to Mr. R.'s specification, medium rare. He praised the steak saying it had excellent flavor, and since he’s a fan of longh hots, they were a plus for him. He was also pleased with the escarole and beans. He ate about half the huge steak and half the generous portion of the escarole and beans. We took home the leftovers and shared them later, making for a delicious evening “snack.” I agree with the high marks he gave them.

The Key Lime Pie was on the specials menu. Since it’s one of my favorite desserts, I ordered it. But our server came back with the disappointing news that they were out of it. He said a large group has been in earlier, they had all ordered the pie, and so it was gone. Sounds as though there was only one pie.

Overall, this meal was fine. Despite the comparisons I made, I would go back. Next time, I’ll probaby share the steak.
