Lenten Fish Fry Suppers

$5.99. Maybe you’re looking at the meal?

Probably, but the web page doesn’t mention it. $5.99 is a great price.

Ah, here’s another page that shows the $5.99 ala carte price.

Inspired by this thread, I went to a Lenten fish fry tonight here in SE PA.

I wanted the fried haddock but all the volunteers praised the fried shrimp so I changed my order. To go with: mac and cheese, stewed tomatoes, cole slaw and applesauce. There was also lobster bisque on offer, so I bought some to take home.

Dessert table was upstairs and was 90% store bought crap. I got homemade sugar cakes, a very typical local cookie. They were not terribly good but here I sit, eating them anyway.

I have to admit i like smashed fried shrimp. Peeling off the last “knuckle” on those half peeled shrimp is a pain.
And the mac and cheese looks like it could be good.

I hope not, 'cause it wasn’t very good.

I had this fish and chips with mushy peas and it was really good. The odd thing about it was that it was Norwegian style fish and chips with Norwegian spiced tartar sauce (is that a thing? It tasted of dill, kind of) served with mushy peas which I always thought of as a British thing. The place was run by a big Norwegian guy.
And it is located in Hua Hin Thailand of all places, it is called Siam Viking on the south side of town.
Well worth a visit if you are in the neighborhood!

A fish fry in Thailand! That’s so great :star_struck:

That fish looks legit, too. Wonder what kind they used?

Haddock.
There were cod and salmon too.
I have never had salmon at a fried fish place. It does not seem right, somehow.

Oh. Thank you for the warning – I was going to walk over and get one.

In past years, I had a GREAT one in Brooklyn…somewhere. And a decent one on Delancey. But the Union Square one was soggy and bread-y.

The one I had today (Popeyes) also wasn’t very good. Much too salty, kind of dry. Not what I remember from the last round.

Ugh, now we have to be those people whining about how “they changed it! it used to be better!”

They have a whole menu. You can just get the “tenders” or “tender bites” if you don’t want a sandwich.

Took mom to the fish fry tonight. Haddock was excellent. Notice the vintage pfaltzgraff pottery.
