What are your favorite dishes at LoS, @honkman ? I’ve never had time to go there when in LV for events and conferences, but definitely planned to visit when I go this Fall.
Some of our favorites are - Nam Kao Tod, northern larbs, Kang Hung Lay, spicy garlic prawns, crispy duck panang, nam prik ong, isaan sausage and we often can’t decide between the mango with sticky rice and the fried banana - so we take both
I can’t stop imagining a cake salad!
Diet to hell in a hand basket for sure
I had a few days in Vegas maybe 12 years ago and out of, I think, five nights, we had two dinners at Lotus of Siam, and I brought take-out home on the plane. That place knocked me out. My favorite was a beef dish with tamarind sauce. You guys know that they opened in NYC but that did not last even a year if I am remembering correctly. When I went it was in a strip mall that had seen better days, right off THE Strip but not ON it. Near the Sahara Hotel (??)
I also remember a great Taiwanese place on Spring Mountain Road that was known for a type of beef roll. Are there still great nondescript Asian spots off the Strip? We never ate in any of the famous places on the Strip, but didi have a cheap-ish buffet breakfast at a semi-down market hotel that had a space theme… Sounds like a refresher trip is in order!
My favorite thing, besides that Thai food, was swimming in the long, long, long, very warm pool at the Bellagio Hotel. We got a deal for $149 a night, in January, but I wonder if those kind of prices are still available in today’s Vegas.
I love Lotus of Siam…and inevitably order the Khao Soi with duck, Nam Prik Ong. This last time we had a tremendous papaya salad with soft-shell crabs…oh my goodness it was great. No joy for dessert though…no mango and sticky rice which is one of my favorite desserts of all time.
We’re headed back to Vegas next month for a friend’s 50th birthday celebration - we’ll have a big group dinner at Bazaar Meat Saturday night and then I think Sunday brunch at the Aria hotel, but other meals are open. Dinner recs for Fri/Sun and lunch on Sat? Not sure what else we’ll be doing - possibly a trip to Valley of Fire during the day on Saturday and a quick Hoover Dam tour on Sunday morning before brunch. I definitely want to hit Tacos el Gordo (maybe Saturday lunch is the right spot for this?). I was considering a return trip to LoS as I loved it when we were there in 2009, but recent reviews have me wondering if it’s worthwhile. Sparrow & Wolf is on the short list. The Black Sheep looks very interesting but a bit of a hike from the strip (where we’re staying); TBD on whether we’ll have a car (this would also impact day trip plans).
Appreciate your thoughts as always, HOs!
Loved The Black Sheep! Had a fantastic crudo, followed by scallops in a beurre blanc, and a chocolate tres leches cake that paired with a Pedro Ximenz. Such a great meal! Our server was delightful as well!
I won’t go to Vegas without returning to LOS (Lotus of Siam).
It’s one of the best Thai restaurants in the US in my opinion.
I won’t disagree with that!! Although my sample is pretty small. I went to LV about ten years ago, for five nights. We had three dinners at LOS.
For us LOS was pretty average when we visited in June with a large group. At least compared to NYC Thai which is having a moment, a long one. So depending where you come from I suppose.
I’m sure this is true. And my visits to LOS were so many years ago… I loved their beef with tamarind so much that I brought a take-out order back with me on the plane. I know nothing about all those new Thai places in NYC but sure would like to try some!!
