Those of you who follow Eric Asimov in the NY Times will know of Dierdre Heekin and her Vermont winery La Garagista. They are not currently open for visits but they have occasional pop-up events at the farm/winery. They held one on Father’s Day, and my SO deemed a visit a suitable present. The winery is atop a hill, around 1600 ft elevation, with wonderful views. The barn near the winery was set up with a pop-up coffee bar and separate bar in the back for wine tasting. We started with a flight of La Garagista wines, all quite distinctive. Their pet nats are pleasant quenchers. We switched gears to pastries baked by Dierdre’s spouse Caleb, a simple panino and one with cherries baked into a focaccia-like bread, the bread savory but a pop of sweetness from the cherries. We enjoyed these in their walled garden together with excellent cappuccino made from beans roasted by Abacadabra Coffee. We returned home with a half-case of wine and a bouquet of gorgeous peonies. A delightful Father’s Day present.
