[Kuching, Malaysia] Meat & Rice

I spent just over a week in Kuching in total with a few trips out of Kuching. Rather than individual meal reports (apart from Leapau) or one very long post I’ve split them up into broad meal types.

Hainanese Chicken rice @
Hock King Authentic Chicken Rice
Lot 163, Hock King Cafetaria, 103, Lorong 7 & Jalan Ban Hock, 93100 Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia

Lovely moist chicken and good flavoured rice. Standards were maintained across 3 visits. Soup was a bit insipid on the first but was far better the second and third time.

Pork Leg Rice@
Fook Seng Cafe
240, 228, Jalan Padungan, 93100 Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia

I was on my way to Noodle Descendents but it’s closed until 21st of May. So went for pork leg rice at Fook Seng instead. This place is a few doors down.
The special pork leg rice was delicious. Lovely tender pork, full flavoured pork soup. The curry and veg soup was a nice addition.

Braisef pork belly and rice @
Tian Lee Fod Centre
243, Jalan Padungan, 93100 Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia

Virtually opposite Fook Seng Cafe. Very handy as it’s open in the evenings when quite a few places aren’t. There are several stalls.
Very soft pork with nice star anise flavour coming through. I liked the soup as it offset the sweetness of the pork. I also added an egg.

Nasi Lemak with lamb curry@

Young 66 Cafe
Jalan Abell, 93100 Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia

A little hard to find it’s next door to Chong Chooon behind City Inn. Lovely fluffy rice with a proper amount of peanuts and ikan bilis. The lamb curry was beautifully tender and there was marrow left in the bones which I love. One of the better nasi lemaks I’ve had.

More to follow, once I can find decent WiFi. Uploading the photos has been a real struggle.

Finally made it to Fook Seng for the pork leg rice. We have tried several times but they were either closed, or pork leg stuff was sold out (which could be before noon and wouldn’t open again in the afternoon). We have had excursions and couldn’t get back before the pork leg rice stall had packed up and left for the day. Fook Seng Cafe has 2 different stalls and the “cafe” under 1 roof, FYI.

Anyways, we got a combo plate of pork leg (the rind and 1 toe), tofu and egg, and a few strands of pickled cucumber. Plus the “master broth” and something that tasted a lot like Vietnamese chicken curry but had cabbage in it. I ate all the sambal belacan in a small dish. “You like sambal belacan?”. Yes! However, on the way out I spotted duck amongst the braised meat/tofu/eggs. They confirmed it was duck. Promised them I’d come back tomorrow morning for the duck.

I make my own food list but never stick to “the plan”. There are more than enough places to check out in my immediate neighbourhood alone (Jalan Padungan). I added "@paprikaboy 's list to my printed notes. Mine is right below (though not visible).

Also, Lepau was quite nice indeed. Expensive (even the water) but food was good, staff friendly and kind (just like at all restaurants/eateries in Sabah and Kuching!). Busy place, most people have made reservations in advance. We just turned up right after opening.

We had a big meal at Hock King Authentic Chicken Rice. Nice that they also open for dinner.

Go Fun Bak Kut Teh was brilliant. A young team run the kitchen.

I would come back to Kuching for the orangutans and Sarawak durians alone. Have been to the wildlife centre 4 times. Amazing to observe these highly intelligent (semi) wild creatures. (But really, who’s watching whom? They sat in the trees or wherever and looked dead straight at me/my camera in 99% of the photos I made! A bit unnerving at times as the males are massive.)
