Malaysian-Chinese street food is so regionalised. One look at this and you know we’re not in Penang anymore.
𝘊𝘩𝘦𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘬𝘦 𝘧𝘶𝘯 (pork noodles) is Cantonese and does not exist in Penang (which is Hokkien, with mainly Teochew street food).
Flat rice noodles, called koay teow by the KL Cantonese: they had adopted the Teochew term for it, as opposed to the Cantonese term, hor fun (used in Hong Kong, Guangdong and even Malaysia’s other large Cantonese city: Ipoh). Here, it’s tossed in a dark soy sauce-based dressing, with garlic oil, pork lard and other condiments. It’s topped with lardons, fried garlic crumbs, and finely-sliced green scallions.
The accompanying soup contained minced pork, pig’s liver, sliced of pork, pork meatballs, and “choy sum” greens in a pork broth. Unfortunately, everything here tasted slightly overcooked, and a certain degree of dryness have crept in - especially in the case of the pig’s liver.
The food court itself has at least a dozen stalls, so I intend to come back to check out the rest.
