[Koya-san, Japan] Koyasan Digital Museum- Cafe Shizuku 高野山デジタルミュージアム

After our hugely disappointing experience at Henjoko-in, we wandered around the town of Koya-san. One of the questions we had beforehand was what kind of food can we find in the town? Is it only Buddhist vegetarian only? There’s actually a variety of food and business in town. As mentioned in the Henjoko-in post, there’s even a Kumon tutoring center up there.

What is a bit surprising, is that there is a modern visual art museum in Koya-san. And a pretty good cafe in there serving up some very legit food.

Menu was not extensive. But they did what they offered well.

We had the Shojin curry and rice,

and the Shojin chazuke with pickled Nanko ume.

Both of them were miles better than the stuff we had at the temple, technique-wise, ingredient-wise, price-wise.

They also offered a bit of packaged food to go, some of which are local food from the Wakayama prefecture.

Great place to kill an hour or two.

The nearby Kongobu-ji, the head temple of Kōyasan Shingon Buddhism in Koya-san, was a good place to stroll around. In fact, if I were to plan Koya-san again, I’d probably do the cemetery and this temple as a day trip, or skip Koya-san altogether.
