[Kota Bharu, Malaysia] Local Chinese dishes at Choo Choon Huay

Over 50 years old, and still popular for family celebratory dinners and even wedding receptions, Choo Choon Huay is a Fuzhou-Chinese restaurant that’s become quite an institution in Kota Bharu. Everything screams of a bygone era, from its retro red-and-white checked table-clothes to the wonky bamboo blinds.

Our lunch consisted of:

  1. Fuzhou pastries filled with minced chicken and chopped coriander. These were delicious:

  1. Hong bak - the Kelantanese-Chinese staple of pork cooked with lots of toasted-then-pounded star anise, minced garlic, palm sugar and dark soy-sauce. A must-not-miss dish:

  2. Chicken herbal soup:

  3. Stir-fried lettuce leaves with garlic and soy-sauce.
