I had dinner recently at Kolapasi, a new South Indian restaurant on 19th off Valencia in the Mission where Medianoche used to be. Kolapasi means “hungry” in Tamil (thanks Google).
The menu, which is quite extensive.
I had a nice cup of masala chai ($3.00), which came unsweetened to adjust to your liking.
Kodi Vepudu ($13.99)
Spicy fried chicken marinated in a robust mix of red chilies, ginger, and garlic
I started off with the kodi vepudu, which is a dish from Andhra Pradesh that I’ve never had before. This was a fried chicken in a thick almost paste like chili sauce with nuts and sautéed onion that was pretty spicy and also a little sweet, perhaps from the onions. The chicken, which I think was thigh meat, was quite tender and flavorful. It was a little crispy from the frying. Delicious!
Madurai Egg Curry Dosa ($10.49)
Dosa is filled with flavorful Madurai-style egg curry
I also had the egg curry dosa. There were two very photogenic dosas filled with a curry of finely chopped egg. The filling was nicely spiced. The dosa were crispy and a little tangy, and conveniently sized for hand held eating. There was also a small bowl of sambar and two chutneys - one sweet tomato chutney and a coconut chutney. This was also very good.
