We caught a late lunch yesterday afternoon with some drinks at Joco’s in Waltham. They’ve revamped their menu somewhat, probably to keep pace with a couple of the other bars on the street that are offering more upscale food options. While I miss the bread plate they used to offer with red pepper feta dip and Joco’s mom’s meatballs, our meal yesterday was very good!
BF got the fish sandwich special, which let you add cheese and bacon for an extra $1 and $2 each. It comes with a choice of side. He got tater tots, which were crispy and not greasy. He really liked his sandwich.
We also split more tots, in the form of the Joco’s loaded tots (cheese, bacon, ranch, scallions). They come in a cast iron bowl that keeps them very hot while you work your way through them.
I had what was described as a wedge salad with steak tips but arrived as a chopped salad, which was fine (and probably easier to eat at the bar. I asked for the steak tips to be medium rare and they were. For those who remember the late Sadie’s Bar and Saloon, rumor has it that Joco’s got their steak marinade recipe (which I believe is ketchup, Italian dressing, and sugar - don’t scoff, it works!). In any event, it is pretty similar and a nice little trip down memory lane.
We hung out for a little while. I drank them out of rosé and switched to Sauvignon Blanc near the end of our visit. BF started with Dorchester Brewing Co.'s Outer Limits Hazy NE IPA (very hoppy and hazy) and down shifted to a Lawson’s Finest Liquids Nitro Stout, which was also good (and better suited to an afternoon of sipping at the bar). They were filling up pretty steadily by the time we left (about quarter to 5). A very enjoyable afternoon!
