Jack's, formerly known as Jack Astors [Ontario] [Canada]

Any recs? Or go-tos that are adequate/ satisfactory?

I haven’t been in about 5 years.

Thanks for any input.

I know it’s a chain. It’s the place that has a decent patio and that’s the priority today.

Milestones took away their mall-side patio in north London ON, after having one from 2020-2023.

Fionn MacCools patio is closed, too. :joy:

Jack’s has a nicer patio than Beertown. :slightly_smiling_face:

Close your eyes and point at something on the menu…

I’ve been eliminating things that have more than 50 percent of my day’s sodium. Also avoiding the chicken and salmon dishes, since I bought a chicken and some salmon this morning to cook for dinner this week. :joy:

I already had bacon in my McGriddle this morning so I won’t get the club.

Nice beef sandwich elsewhere yesterday so not in the mood for a burger or beef sandwich.

Avoiding garlic today so no bruschetta.

I don’t usually order fish tacos unless the restaurant tells me what type of fish. Jack’s just says fish on its menu. Which probably means tilapia or basa, which I also avoid. :joy: :joy:

Haha.

So, it’s looking like a vegetarian Fiesta Bowl or maybe something made with shrimp.

:joy:
Ya, I’m a food snob. I’ll find something.

I have never been to a Jack Astor’s. On the rare occasion that I have to eat at these kinds of places, I focus on something that is hard to screw up - simple, not ambitious. I also try to order something that is palatable within a wide range of expertise. I also tend to order a healthier option, figuring the calories are going to be low yield.

Interestingly, my first visit was around 1997, and we drove across London, about 25 minutes away, to visit the location in south London, because my friend from Brampton, said it was amazing.

The portions back then were twice the size of what Kelsey’s was serving. I had a mushroom farfalle and brought half home.

I have had their pan bread, fiesta bowl. Wings are fine.

Bone for tuna!

Apart from basic items like chicken wings or a burger, I kind of like the farfalle with Asiago-crusted chicken.

Good to know! I’ll try it next time.

So, we tried the warm cheese and beer dip the server recommended, which is a seasonal feature. It came with some little soft pretzel nuggets and tortilla chips. It has a bit of a Velveeta and cheddar thing going on, with a jalapeno and beer kick. Good for what it is.

I had the chicken street tacos, which were fine. My DCs had the grilled chicken and goat cheese wrap, and the chicken pad Thai.

I chose the Caesar salad as my side, which I brought home for later.

I’d order the chicken tacos again.

I almost ordered the fish tacos - then I saw that calorie count. (Didn’t bother asking what kind of fish) :joy:

I put the chicken I was planning to roast today or tomorrow in the freezer for next week. :joy:

I’m heading back this weekend, since Jack’s is willing to keep their patio open for us.
London has less patio options in late October than Toronto.

Even Toronto has relatively few patios open this mid October, and even less with good food.

I’m not sure I’ll start a Toronto winter patio thread this year, since there seem to be very few heated patios with decent ventilation and good food.

The chicken tacos were okay at Jack’s on my visit this past summer.

Maybe I’ll try a fall feature. Will report back.

The cheeseburger and russet fries ($20.25) were good at Jack Astors North in London, ON. The bruschetta was good, too.

The service was fine. People at our table also ordered the Fiesta Salad, the chicken tacos and the lobster & crab dip.
