It’s 2024 - What Are You Reading?

I’ve been toying with adding that to my growing list of streaming services. I do love Britbox.

Crashing on Once There Were Wolves by Charlotte McConaghy for my bookclub meeting tonight. I’m really engrossed in the story but there is alot of domestic violence that weaker stomachs might not want to read. I hope things turn around for a nice ending but fear perhaps not.

Before that, I read Real Life and Other Fiction by Susan Coll. Weird that so many of my recent reads have taken place in West Virginia, this one in Point Pleasant WV, home of the (mythical?) Mothman. Enjoyable tale of a middle aged woman estranged from her weirdo cheating husband and suffering from an early childhood trauma. She finds answers, a new puppy, and new love. Great for poolside.

Reminds me … A Three Dog Life by Abigail Thomas. Excellent writer, true story from her life.

Only a third in but the writing is great fun. Black Sabbath fans/bass fans rejoice.

Ultra-Processed People by Chris van Tulleken—a downloadable from the library
The Bushbaby by William Stevenson—a reread from seventh grade!

I returned it :weary:. I realized everything in my holds queue was dystopian or dark and cynical, and I just want lighter reading material for before bed :woman_facepalming:t2:

I’m almost done with a fun and lightweight one: Pretty Good Number One: An American Family Eats Tokyo by Matthew Amster-Burton. The only thing I don’t like is that it makes me crave Japanese food which is a little difficult to find in my neighborhood!

I loved that book, can you recommend any more like that?

How We do Harm, Otis Brawley, MD

Eye opener. He used to be the head of Oncology at Grady Memorial in Atlanta. I heard him on the radio when he spoke at Metropolitan Club in SF, then got his book from the library.

I recommend it to everybody.

Was that more recently than the book? I’m wondering if he still experiences practicing medicine the way he did when he wrote the book.

I heard him on the radio after he wrote the book. At least 10 or more years ago.

Have you read his book?

Just remembered, it was the Commonwealth Club, the Friday night talks were broadcast live on the radio. I don’t know if this is still going on.

I have not. I was checking it out, and realized it was published in 2012.

I think most people don’t question what their doctors advise and prescribe. From someone on Chowhound, I learned about the book The Truth About Statins. Look online at interviews with Dr Rita Redberg, a Cardiologist practicing at UCSF in San Francisco, where she explains her opinion of Statins.

Fair enough. It sure doesn’t feel that way, at least sometimes.

In any case, it’s interesting to think about it in the context of overtrtreatment of cancer.

Believe me, I’m looking! I’m about to start So Happiness to Meet You: Foolishly, Blissfully Stranded in Vietnam by Karin Esterhammer. It sounds good, but we’ll see.

Oh great, I loved it!

Have you read Riding the Iron Rooster by Paul Theroux?
Dark Star Safari?

I liked Native Stranger by Eddy Harris

Might be hard to find: Living Poor, Thomsen. An older guy, farmer, joins the Peace Corps and is sent to a village in Ecuador.

I used to be a Theroux fan, but sort of forgot about him. I’m not familiar with these so I’ll give them a try . Thanks so much!

Iron Rooster is old but a favorite. I think it was in this book that he wrote that he wondered about China’s (at that time) strict one child policy (usually a boy) if that would make Chinese citizens more reluctant to go to war. Would not want to risk sacrificing their only child.

Just started The Wager by David Grann, recommended to me by a book club friend. Realized it’s a ebook not an audio so I downloaded Unconditional, about the Japanese surrender in WW2. Should keep me busy for a bit

Right now I’m going through a Walter Mosley/ S.A. Cosby phase, and reading “My Darkest Prayer” by Cosby, while I wait for Farewell Amethystine by Mosley
