It’s 2024 - What Are You Reading?

Thanks for the rec, just finished ebook loan; I had never read anything by Stephen King before. (I don’t watch scary movies, House of Wax nearly killed me when I was about 10.) I didn’t realize he wrote Shawshank Redemption, such an excellent movie.

Two easy, fun reads: Pretty Good Number One (about a family in Tokyo for about a month) and So Happiness to Meet You, a family in Viet Nam, lady is teaching English, living in a district where expats are not common.

I’ve watch that movie more times than I should admit. King’s son is an excellent writer as well. Pen name, Joe Hill.

Yes, I read up about SK on WIKI, didn’t know he was addicted to coke and alcohol for 10 years.

I finally finished this last night. A sweet book. Not much plot, all about relationships, queer and straight alike. Some fun historical aspects and set in Florence and London. An enjoyable read but rather long at 400 pages. I also found some of the writing/story cliche but overall am glad I read it.

I feel that most authors should be able to wrap up a story in 400 pages. Come on, man. I’ve only got so many reading years ahead of me!

I finished Master Slave Husband Wife the other day on a long drive home. About a married couple who escaped from AL to MA in 1849. Went straight into Erik Larson’s Demon of Unrest about the early 1860’s lead up to the civil war. Need to move out of the 19th century….

On deck - Once There Were Wolves by Charlotte McConaghy. August book club selection about which I know nothing yet.

What did you think? I finally got the copy I was waiting for on my library app, but passed it on, since two people were waiting. I didn’t think I was in the mood.

It was an interesting history sandwich. Story of the Crafts at the beginning and the end with a lesson about abolition characters and the Fugitive Slave Act in the middle. I learned a lot and was engaged throughout. So many people I’d never heard of.

You should pick up Different Seasons, which includes “Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption” as well as “The Body” which became the excellent Stand By Me, “Apt Pupil,” which became a lesser movie of the same name, and “The Breathing Method.” None of them are in SK’s usual horror vein. I’m not big on scary movies but I have loved SK’s books for nearly 50 years.
