Indonesian

I have a friend who just returned from SE Asia and is already greatly missing the food. During a conversation, I realized I really don’t have much of an idea of notable examples of Indonesian cuisine in the SoCal area, other than yelp confirming my suspicion that much of it is located in the ESGV.

I’ve been to Merry’s House of Chicken, but that was at about a decade ago – is it still good? I also recall enjoying Simpang Asia in Palms. What are some other places that are good examples of Indonesian cuisine, particularly any subregional specialists?

Distance is no object; open to recommendations anywhere in LA, OC, SD, San Berdoo or Ventura.

Yes, we’ve been there, and we also just enjoyed a meal at Belacan Grill in Tustin, as well. We thought Ipoh Kopitiam was good, but while we are aware of a handful of primarily “Malaysian” places, we were drawing blanks on more specifically “Indonesian” – I know that can be a little bit like splitting hairs, but it would be good to know some good places that are specialists, just like Cambodian vs. Thai.

Do some recon on mr sate ?

Used to be a spot on Westwood and Santa Monica called ramayana (?) closed up now. It was mediocre.

Haven’t been to this spot

Ooooh this looks good! Now do they have actual dining service, or is it just prepared foods to-go?

I saw Toko Rame when I was yelping and bookmarked it – this one is fairly close to me, so I should be able to try it easily.

Mr. Sate isn’t as convenient for me to get to, but I’ll ask my friend if they’ve been.

Good nasi bungkus however it’s been a while since my last visit. @EattheWorldLA has a good recent write up

@strongoxman takeout only, although they do have a dining table on the sidewalk. Recommend dropping by lunch time for the best selection. Pair with a large cup of freshly crushed sugar cane at Vitacane, 1/2 mile eastwards also on Valley; or Musang King durian smoothie 1/2 mile westwards on Valley @ Jell & Chill.

+1 for Toke Rame (that Sumatran goat curry is jaw-dropping) and Medan Kitchen.

Thanks for the recommendations, everyone! I’ve forwarded a few on that were very well-received, so I’m looking forward to trying some of these in the coming weeks/months :grinning:
