Immigrante - tasty Latin American fare in [The Beach, Toronto].

We recently tried Immigrante, after hearing good things about their food. Their menu covers a number of different Latin American countries. While their Mexican options may be very good, we focused mainly on Venezuelan dishes, with a detour to Argentina for dessert. Everything we had was well-flavoured, although I have no idea how authentic any of it is.

We tried 3 of their cocktails:

  • Pica Pica: Mezcal Joven, homemade ancho liqueur, jalapeño, simple syrup, and lime, with a Tajin rim. Really great, with lots of sour lime and some complex kick.
  • Tomatillo: mezcal, St. Germain, fresh tomatillo juice, celery, tomato, and spices. My wife thought it was too vegetal, but I didn’t mind it.
  • Beso de Coco: basically a clarified coconut and sugarcane daiquiri, apparently inspired by a Venezuelan treat. It came with a coconut sugar cane cookie. Good, with the toasted coconut being prominent.

We started with tequeños, a Venezuelan pastry wrapped around asadero cheese. Simple and enjoyable. It came with unnecessary aioli.

You can order arepas in 3s and mix up the fillings. We each got reina pepiada, with pulled chicken, avocado, mayo. Delicious corn pockets, crisp on the outside soft on the inside. We also tried pabellon veggie with avocado, cheese, black beans, and plantain. Also great.

Arroz Frito Venezolano is the Venezuelan spin on Chinese fried rice. We added chicken. It reminded us of other Latin-Chinese fusion we’ve had before in terms of the mix of flavours.

For dessert, we tried two:
