"I'll have the usual . . . ."

Two poached eggs over extra, extra crispy hash browns. Coffee. DH always go for pancakes, two eggs scrambled, and bacon. Coffee.

Un caffe macchiato, per favore.

I guess it just depends on the mood. If Iā€™m going to be doing things after breakfast, Iā€™d just as soon go out for breakfast. But on a day such as this Sunday was (off-and-on rainstorms pretty much all day) I stayed in and made some quick scrambled.

I never said the crab cakes were made from fresh crab. Oh if only! Iā€™m in San Francisco and just meant that the crab cake benedict seems to be prolific in these parts on brunch menus. Honestly, most of the time I end up being disappointed in them. But for some reason Iā€™m always compelled to order them - just in case I hit the jackpot of deliciousness.

We frequently go out to breakfast on Sunday during football season. At one of our local casinos we get the 333. Three eggs, three strips of bacon, potatoes and toast for $3.33. And a cup of their really terrific coffee for a buck. Watch the first half of the ball games and go home. Then my kitchen is all clean if I want to start cooking.

My usual is corned beef hash, 2 poached eggs on top & rye toast. And Iā€™m particular about my corned beef hash. Soā€¦ one Friday morning weā€™re on an adventure up north of Bath ME. & looking for a place for breakfast when we spot ā€œShips Chow Hall.ā€ Tiny place - 3 booths on each side & two tables in the middle. The back corner is the kitchen staffed by a scrawny blonde who it turns out is the cook, waitress, owner & bakes 6 types of bread every morning. ā€œWhatā€™ll it be,ā€ she asks. Since itā€™s a new place to me & Iā€™m picky about my CB Hash I ask if itā€™s made there & she says 'Of course." ā€œWell, what do you put in it,ā€ I ask (because I do NOT want green or red peppers or any of the other miscellaneous stuff people seem obligated to put in CB Hash). She gives me a look like Iā€™m something she found on the bottom of her shoe & says "Corned beef & potatoes. You want something else, go somewhere else. "

Seeing as how we shared similar beliefs about Hash we got along just fine after that.

Then you should love bicuits and crab gravy?

I wouldnā€™t kick it out of bed for eating crackers.

Spicy Italian sausage skillet with eggs over easy. I love spicy foods for breakfast.

Thatā€™s my kinda lady.

The village has four cafes that offer breakfast. Almost needless to say, I have tried them all with a disappointing lack of success and thereā€™s no need for me to trouble three of them again for anything more than a cup of coffee.

However, the original place, which is attached to one of our two bakeries, offers a Big Breakfast (there is a smaller offering but, almost needless to say, I have never experienced that). So, on the occasions when I feel the need to boost my cholesterol levels, the Big Breakfast includes bacon, sausage, black pudding, fried egg, tomato, baked beans, fried mushrooms and toast. The price used to include the coffee but, hey, itā€™s austerity time here.

Western Omelet, whole wheat toast with butter & grape jelly, hot tea with milk, small O.J.

Is a Western omelet the same as a Denver omelet?

Basically, yes. Ham, onions, bell peppers. Traditionally in the Northeast, cheese is not even mentioned. Some places offer cheese as an option, others automatically include it. My usual has no cheese; itā€™s the dish I use to judge a new diner. The places that get it right cook the extras before adding them to the eggs.

Oh yikes, so there are those who donā€™t??? Wow

Raw onions and green peppers, uncooked ham in an omelet? Who does this? Wise that you give them a wide berth!

We live about six blocks from a true greasy spoon. Wonderful people watching opportunitiesā€“but I digressā€¦

My optimal breakfast at this dive is: two eggs over medium, four sausage links, hash browns fried hard, rye toast with extra butter; and a cup of the worst coffee Iā€™ve ever tasted.

16 year old fry cooks at chain places, Iā€™d surmise.
I ordered tortilla soup as my test at all new Mexican places for quite a while. Wide variation.
