I hadn’t been here in several years and couldn’t pass up the parking.
Alas, somewhat unaffordable.
Personally I think the breads are a whole level above the pastries, and a lot cheaper too (relatively).
Doesn’t this statement apply to the Bay Area (maybe even the entire West Coast) as a whole? ![]()
I’ve never tried their bread; there was a gorgeous baguette sitting there, about $7 but I’d just been to Rainbow and had bought an Acme sourdough baguette!
In all fairness … Tartine is far superior and less expensive than many other places in SF now.
Just a little sticker shock since I hadn’t been there since before Covid! Also am trying to live within my means.
Next time I want the smoked salmon/cream cheese bagel and morning bun. Would like that Coconut Cake for a special occasion!
The friend I was with got the ham/cheese/jalapeño croissant and the tiniest macchiato, about 2-3 inches tall, I sampled both.
No, not really.
Tartine is a bargain, all things considered.
I have eaten sourdough and olive bread from almost every good bakery in the Bay Area. I still like Tartine’s the most.
I have eaten quite a lot of their pastries. They are nice. But there are patisseries that are comparable, if not better.
I love b. Patisserie but I haven’t been there in at least 3 years. They are pretty affordable.
I think that Forma (Oakland) gives Tartine’s bread a run for the money.
The “old find a parking space right in front of a place in SF…so you have to stop trick.” I use to apply that, particularly in the Mission taco joints, as in it’s a sign you were meant to stop. My now gone Dad use to have the uncanny ability to find parking spaces right in front of restaurants and places anywhere in SF. More than a few times met for dinner with the family and someone would ask where’s Dad. Then someone would point out the window as he pulled into a space right in front. Now we call getting that space the “dad space”.
Recently I was doing some errands with a friend, hadn’t brought my purse, friend had no $ with her.
Passed the Golden Boy on Taraval, huge big parking space in front (usually there’s no parking, people are parking at the hydrant, running to grab. Was such a shame to pass up a slice. It would have taken 20+ minutes for a round trip home for $ then there’d been no parking!
I just drive my UPS truck.
Those guys just park anywhere and get away with it.
Monkey see, monkey do.
Regarding the Mission Tartine and parking, its not overly hard to find a parking spot either right on 18th or on some adjacent streets. Even on Saturdays and Sundays, most of the time there are spots within a couple of blocks.
Now, parking in downtown, North Beach and Chinatown- that’s a bit more challenging.
I print out a sheet of what each curb color’s restriction is from SFMTA and put it in the glove box. It serves me well over the years.
When I lived in SF I use to commute in car from the Richmond to SOMA. I had a running list of places along the way. If there was a parking spot I’d stop. From SOMA back I’d usually take 9th St. over Market to Larkin. Up Hayes was the old Powell’s Place, and at Geary and VanNess Tommy’s Joynt. At Powell’s Place I’d usually order like 3 pieces to go…and they’d fill the whole bag full of fried chicken. When they moved to the new place, I never went. I also commuted to the Mission and parking was never an issue…until night when the hipsters and everyone went for eats and drink. Then I moved to Oakland and what do you know…plenty of parking and there’s sunshine.
I’ve fallen twice at home recently, first time sprained my knee (had replacement in 2018) and second fall sprained my ankle so it’s hard for me to walk far right now.
Understood. Maybe try the Tartine Manufactory. Its probably a bit easier to find parking.
There are so many yellow zones now everywhere. My daughter has plates on her CRV that allow her to park in most of them for 30 minutes.
I want to try the lunch at Flour & Water pasta place at 20th/Florida, affordable. My daughter tried it and liked it. Making fresh pasta at home takes TIME! So that Tartine is close by.
The old commercial plate trick? I had a truck in SF for a few years, very handy.
BTW, UPS trucks run a huge illegal parking tab in SF, HUGE….about $1.5m in SF.
Vans qualify to get them, only about $25.
