Husband says he wants to do Montreal and Quebec City for 8 days next Aug/Sept for our family vacation.

I mean, :crossed_fingers:t2:; we will have to see if my dining companions go for it and prioritize it.

I was thinking I’d throw it out as an idea for one of our meals out when I go next.

Not sure what one of my DCs will make of Ethiopian, but I think Tunisian / Moroccan tagines would appeal broadly.

I’ve been gifted chocolates from Fous twice this year by people who’ve visited Montreal. Some of the best chocolates I have ever had.

Never heard of Fous chocolates before. Google came up with nothing. Is there a website on the box?

There is a quirky clock/chocolate shop on Crescent Street, called “La Pendulerie”. It carries a variety of chocolate brands and cocoa percentages from many countries. You can get a hot chocolate or milkshake made from any one of them. That’s where I came across the wonderful, but expensive, Felchlin brand.

Apparently it is a patisserie with chocolates. Here’s the website: https://fousdesserts.com/ There is a link to the chocolates on the upper left side of the home page.

It looks like quite a few of us will be going to Montreal during the next couple of months! It will be my turn in September since I will be going for my university homecoming.

@ChristinaM I haven’t been to Montreal in 10 years but there are a ton of dumpling shops on Ste. Catherine IIRC and apparently they are all good. I’ve been to Sammi and Soupe Dumplings and it is very good. I’ve also been to Kazu, also on Ste. Catherine and I had a lovely meal there. If you go there will be a line up regardless of what time you go but it is worth the wait.

If you are looking for cheap eats I could recommend Marché Adonis. It’s Middle Eastern grocery store, also on Ste. Catherine, but they have a fast food type restaurant there as well as a seating area and the food is very good.

I have been asked for recommendations in or near Old Quebec for our first evening. If there is nothing to recommend, is there anything to avoid?

There are quite a few tourist traps in the Quebec City old town.

I wasn’t that happy with our fine dining at an old favourite, in 2019. I won’t mention which place, because it’s 5 years later.

For heavy traditional foods with massive portions, there’s this place. I haven’t been in ages, but it is traditional QC food done well. I would suggest sharing your mains if you visit.

We usually go for crêpes in the morning. I’ve visited 2 different crêperies in the Old Town. I liked this le Petit Chateau crêperie.

Le Billeg is outside the Old Town, but not too far. I haven’t been.

The following is a sponsored link that popped up in my feed. There might be a few places worth visiting.

If you’d like a VERY high-end French place, try Le St. Amour. I’ve been there a number of times, albeit many years ago. Always impressed.

(The St Amour is the place that I wasn’t going to mention. :slightly_smiling_face:Perhaps, it was an off night in 2019. Beautiful space, and good service, regardless)

Another favourite Montreal chef of mine is Derek Dammann. He closed Maison Publique a whole back.

He currently is the chef at Restaurant Ile de France, on the 9th floor of the Eaton Centre shopping mall downtown, on Ste Catherine.

There is lots to recommend in and near to Old Quebec, depending on what you are interested in and depending on your preferred budget range.

For casual and poutine-focused, Le Chic Shack is very good, particularly for the 2.0 poutines. For an old school casse-croûte, I suggest Chez Gaston, which is about a 15-minute walk from Old Quebec.

For a kind of touristy and yet still quite tasty experience, try La Bûche. It’s like a tour of Quebec’s greatest hits: tourtiere, pea soup, maple sugar pie, etc.

For really expensive and yet worth-it cocktails, try 1608, the bar in the Fairmont Chateau Frontenac.

And there are lots of options for great fancy meals as noted above. Chez Boulay focuses on local Quebec products. Bleu Marine is also very good, with 4 and 6-course tasting menus. For the ultimate splurge, Restaurant Tanière³ has one of the best dining experiences we’ve had in Canada.

I haven’t been to Aux Anciens Canadiens in decades, but it was a great old-school dining experience in the past.

Joe Beef, today.

Re: APDC in the summer
Au Pied de Cochon usually gets fresh seafood deliveries from the Gaspé daily during the summer months. I stick to seafood rather than foie, pork or duck when I visit APDC during warm weather.

If anyone is visiting Mtl this month and wants to splurge, the lobster roll at Au Pied de Cochon is decadent. It’s not traditional. It’s served on brioche, foie and yuzu drizzle in the past. Market price for the lobster. Sometimes it’s possible to choose the size/ weight.

I would recommend sharing it with a dining companion, if you order it and aren’t dining solo.

Over the last 22 years I have been to Montreal at least 14 times. During my very first visit (for business) I was wondering around Plateau and just by chance walked along Rue Duluth. Through one of the windows I have spotted a restaurant which intrigued me. They just opened the door about 5 pm and I walked in and requested a table. The greeter probably though I was insane because they were booked solid for a month to come. She took her pity on me eventually a let me sit at the bar. The meal with an excessive amount of foie gras was amazing ! It was my first time in APDC.
Since than every time in Montreal I have to eat there. APDC always is the highlight of my visit. I have probably tried everything on the menu over the years. It is still my opinion that APDC is the best restaurant in North America. Should be the priority for every visitor to Montreal.
As for fish selection, they use to do the shellfish plates/trays with variety of the condiments. Always loved them. Than they stopped doing it. On my most recent visit 2 years ago they had it again. Please try if it is available.

Strange. I’ve always had great food there. Same owners as Chez Boulay.

I like APDC in Montreal, except for the time I tried their seafood platter. Everything was rubbery. Their foie gras is, of course, amazing. I have a recipe book that has their “cromesquis” - little foie gras “liquid bombs”. On one occasion when I was sitting at the bar and talking to the chefs, I mentioned that my cromesquis failed; they told me their tweak.

I’ve always wanted to try the chef’s table at Européa in Montreal (if they still have it): 25 courses plus 1/2 bottle of Champagne for $250. Supposed to be a 4-hour affair.
