I really need to do a World Tour of favorite meals in the DC area that I haven’t been to since the Pandemic. The Pandemic represents a serious demarcation, and there are places I really need to return.
First stop is Nanjing Bistro in Fairfax. Perhaps the only purveyors of Hauiyang Cuisine in the area with an entire menu of delicacies they do very well.
I made sure to order my three favorite dishes which comprise a distinctive meal plus I added a new one. It was an especially gratifying treat.
My three standards are the Nanjing Lions Head Meatball (I think simply called large meatball on the menu).the tofu with thousand year egg with its addictive red sauce, and the cabbage with fermented shrimp. The new dish for me was Nanjing roast duck, which is quite the bargain at $12 for a substantial portion.
The style of menu and decor have changed, and maybe even the prep has subtly changed, but this is a meal with the hallmarks of delicate, slightly sweet cooking. The duck meat was super moist and heavenly.
Sorry for no pictures, we were too busy eating.
