My mother called me from Maryland (from her cell phone) – no power, no land-line.
She told me she is going back to bed, where its warm.

I had my first black ice slip and fall at midnight last night, whacking my tailbone. It happened so quickly I didn’t try break my fall, and I landed on the concrete in a seated position. No scrapes, no twists, just down.
LOL
I am usually really careful. My balance isn’t as good as it once was, which is why I had to give up downhill skiing and cycling 3 years ago. I am lucky that I haven’t fallen down in about 18 months.
I’m not really hurt, just bruised, I was lucky.
We dodged a bullet. Early am; hear there are numerous downed trees and power outages. A lot of schools had closed in anticipation of The Big One.
Glad you are OK…
thank you!
I hope she gets power soon.
It’s snowing harder now (nyc) than it was last night – sideways and upwards too ![]()
But it sure is pretty!
My family in central NJ is also reporting 2 feet and counting. Dad is saying drifts up to 4 feet.
Mom just called me – electricity came back on.
All is well… and she is warm.
Thank you!
Yea! Good news!
The sight of your lights coming back on after a power outage is a memorable one.
Electricity is something we take for granted.
Until it goes away.
Yes… I wish she would move to the Desert.
I’ve offered to move her here, but the answer is always “No”.
Dang! Glad nothing is broken! It happens too often!
The 2003 blackout in NYC was…memorable.
Oh no! I wish I was closer - I’d bring you some saganaki!
Meanwhile, my experience during that blackout was lots of free food and drink from restaurants that would’ve had to pitch everything.
I think many people had much less pleasant experiences than that.
(I forced my office to let people leave right after it happened instead of convincing everyone that things were going to be fine so we should just keep going once the generators kicked on… 2001 was not that far behind us then, still fresh.)
When it’s weather-related, though, Sandy is what I think of first, not 2003. Watching sections of the city black out from downtown on up, like a bad movie.

Also Irene, because I managed to be in the wrong place (upstate) for that one, too.
Am I thinking of Irene? When the grid went off 20 blocks at a time, and stopped right at the park?
No, Sandy walloped Manhattan. Irene walloped Ulster County. Both times I chose where we should go to avoid a hurricane. Both times I was incorrect.
We lost power for both, but at least for Sandy, I could eventually get a bus to midtown and work in the NYPL. Irene found me trying to cook eggs over charcoal. We were trapped in our cabin without power because the creek submerged the bridge over it, and we couldn’t get to the main road.
