How do you research eateries in Japan?

App not available in Canada?

Not available in Canada App Store. Need to use Japan App Store or just look at the web version

Thanks :pray:t2:

Partially answering my own question. Downloading the app requires setting the country of the app store to Japan, which requires a valid Japanese payment method. with credit card, it needs a JP address.

Maybe someone can get Paypay to work outside Japan?

Can’t you just use the webpage ?

I haven’t used the app but I can imagine the app has better location functionality for finding good restaurants near where I am instead of having to fumble trying to write the name.

My breakfasts in Japan are usually light - used to be fruit yogurt but nowadays I make sure to have their egg sando. Personally I prefer the one from 7-11 but FamilyMart comes in a at a close second. Lawson is worst out of the 3.

I sometimes visit a coffee shop / kissaten for the obligatory morning coffee for my wife. We will then have some thick toast or crème caramel.

We were in Osaka last 2 days and our hotel had a bread breakfast. Basically rolls that they mixed and baked fresh every day.

To download the Tabelog app for Iphones:

  1. change your apple id to Japan
  1. choose no payment information

  2. enter any japanese address, including made-up ones. Just make sure the postal code is real and matches the city.

  3. download the Tabelog app.

So after you download the Tabelog app after switching location, you can switch back and it still works?

I have been unable to download any US-only apps because of this important and possibly costly (I have some prepaid Japan-only apps/subscriptions) part of changing the country:

“ Before you update your location, you must spend your store credit, cancel your subscriptions, and get a payment method for your new country or region.”

So buyer beware. And I don’t trust sites that say you can change it without losing those apps/subscriptions.

Ya, I think I’ll stick to their online site and give the app a pass.

You first have to create a Japanese Apple ID (which i think you can do on a computer). Then you can actually change the location of just the app store on your phone. Go into app store, hit top right figure, scroll all the way to bottom and sign out. Sign into Japan account and download. I change account amongst different countries often and there is no issue
