How do you like your martini?

Writer Gary Shteyngart samples martinis across NYC.

But maybe chugs is a better word than samples. At one stop he downs
over ten martinis. Those Russians!

I read it too. None of the martinis appealed to me. What sort of palate finds Plymouth sharp? It was more of an anti-vermouth, anti-moderation, pro-brine bar crawl.

OVER TEN MARTINIS??? :scream: :scream: :scream:

Wonder how he felt the next day. I think my record (over many hours) is 5.

I make three jiggers of gin and one of vermouth for two martinis. We generally stop at two each. On rare occasions after horrid days we take it to three. Obliteration of faculties is the result. We are too blown out for TV. The dog hates it.

I rarely drink more than 1 or 2 martinis at home. I have enough trouble remembering shows I watched fully sober for longer than 24 hours

The 5 martinis were most definitely on a night out, likely with my gal pals.

At home we prefer a 4:1 ratio. After a couple of nights of abstinence I am looking forward to a martini with Wilds gin. Interesting how they describe the flavor profile. I found it on the pinier side… in a good way.

Have you tried Askur? I had a few martinis with it in Pittsburgh and really enjoyed it

Have not tried Askur. We are trading off between Hendricks and Botanist this time around. My wife is a Hendricks fan. I am working on it. My default gin is original Tanq, but I am quite happy with Bombay White, Beefeater, Botanivore, Botanist, Caorunn, Ford’s, and many other juniper forward gins, even Gordon’s. My splurge gin used to be Isle of Harris.

 The mister and I just spent a fair amount of time trying and failing to remember anything about the episode of 3 Body Problem we thought we’d watched the night before.

We didn’t watch 3 Body Problem. We watched Fallout.

anyone up for a ‘vodka martini?’

two version I have found:
dry vermouth and vodka
gin, dry vermouth and vodka

I prefer the latter - and since I’m doing the mixing . . .
1:1:1 gin:vodka:dry vermouth
altho I usually cut the dry vermouth to 0.5

That sounds… strikingly familiar.

I like the Botanist a lot, my PIC is big on Hendricks (tho their special editions are hit or miss). We alternate between those, Bluecoat, Drumshanbo at home, with the occasional treat / souvenir thrown in.

I love St George’s Terroir as well.

Wilds martini with a twist.

I like Bluecoat, too. Terroir is amazing. It is my holiday season gin. A Terroir martini beats the heck out of eggnog.

Thank you, that was excellent.

Yes, great article. Funny seeing wmbrownproject here (the guy taking the author for 10 martinis) - I’ve been following him a long time eg on instagram but through my penchant for men’s wear.

At home the most martinis I have had were 3! In a bar, I think 5 yes, same as @linguafood I believe.

My record, home or away, is four. And that was one time, and it was a very, very bad idea.

Day drinking is my favorite way of drinking.

per multiple (and yet untrustworthy…) web sites . . . .
the “volume” of a martini glass is 8 fluid ounces = 236.6 ml

the component spirits for a martini are mostly in the 80 proof aka 40% alcohol.

so, , , one fluid ounce martini is roughly 3.2 fluid ounces=95 ml of “pure alcohol”

if one researches how much ‘pure’ alcohol is required to sot a human . . .
. . . . it’s nothing close to 5x much less 10x

I’ve heard about that Duke’s martini before, and as I pretty much said on Chowhound: it might be OK, but it is mostly performative nonsense.

Also, the “possibly” 10 martinis were during the whole day, not in one stop.

With ya completely on the performative thing. As to ten martinis, even if spread over a waking day, that day will be counted as lost.
