I’ll only eat Hebrew National. I like the spicing.
No mention of Vienna Beef so far.
THE dog of Chicago.
Good stuff when we can get them
at tasteofchicago.com you can get a pack with the dogs, poppy buns, sport peppers, neon relish etc…it’s pretty good, same with the malnati’s pies. personally i feel this is a dog that needs to be boiled not grilled. a few spots in socal feature vienna beef too.
My high school cafeteria sold what was called a Whistle Dog. Hot dog in a bun,
with a slice of processed (American) cheese, and a piece of bacon.
I’m sorry. Toasted buns and an aversion to sauerkraut is a disqualification from me taking him seriously.
That’s almost un-American! But he didn’t like StL dog so that’s a good thing.
Except he’s in Canada.
Oh well.
Tim:
Have you tried this riff with bockwurst? I enjoy brats, but I’ve never understood why they’re anyone’s favorite.
Confession: I’ve developed a fondness for the hotdog style with cheese inside…
Kaleo
Oh, I like toasted buns.
My friend ran a hot dog cart at Union Station in TO, and sometimes I helped. She toasted the buns on the BBQ to warm them up.
Sauerkraut is one of the toppings available at most hot dog carts in Ontario, located in busy street corners, and outside night clubs in Toronto, and outside our Canadian Tire stores in midsized cities.
I’d guess most Canadians that buy hot dogs from hot dog carts stick with mustard, relish and ketchup.
I don’t do ketchup on hot dogs.
My favorite hot dog while in Canada was Japadog in Vancouver. Would totally go for importing that to the States (and Boston area, in particular).
I haven’t been to Vancouver in ages. It’s on my list, I hope to visit next year. https://japadog.square.site/
There’s a japadog stand on the Santa Monica pier also.
Cheers.
I like Johnsonville jalapeno cheddar.
One more thing… possibly the best restaurant up here was Christian Masse’s “Zachary Jaques”. It has long since been gone, but I just discovered he has an establishment in Diamond Springs named “Allez!”.
Haven’t been there, but based on the meals I had at ZJ it is difficult not to recommended it.
Thanks. I’ll put it on the list. Just looked at the menu. Everything sounds wonderful. I think I might have a breakdown deciding what to get!
Every time I went to ZJ I had the Escargot, usually followed up by a Caesar salad and Salmon en Croute or Crab Cakes… all of it amazing. Their Rack of Lamb was also great.
Unfortunately the salmon isn’t on the new menu.
I remember taking a business partner from New York there. He basically complained about everywhere we ate until he ordered the red peppercorn steak at ZJ… and he couldn’t shut up about it for days! So if that shows up in the specials it would be something to consider.
Other things that catch my eye on the new menu are the seafood crepes and the Paella (it appears that they make their own sausage in-house).
So get a chili cheese dog and fries for lunch. Bring a cooler and order the Carnitas and BBQ to go (it is all better reheated the next day or two), but then what do you do until dinner at Allez!?
Well… a few miles up the 49 from Placerville is some serious gold country, including Sutter’s Mill at Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park in Caloma.
And just east of Placerville is Boeger Winery, and a couple of miles east of it is the Apple Hill area with over 50 family run farms (great fruits, veggies, baked goods, and other neat sundries like jams and jellies). Early Fall is the best time for this, but really recommend you visit on a weekday as weekends during that time of the year can be crazy busy.
Hope you’re hungry!
Thanks for the recs. Unfortunately you haven’t made it any easier!
Ha ha… and I just noticed they had the Salmon en Croute on their Valentines Day menu.
Unfortunately, their site says they list their specials/news on a Facebook page, and I don’t do FB. Disappointing they can’t keep their website up to date. How hard is that (I’d volunteer to do it for a free meal/update)?
I’m not on FB either. You should definitely volunteer to help them with their website!
