SOCIAL PLACE, New Town Plaza, Sha-Tin - Brother bonding over some funky and cool ‘nouveau’ Cantonese cuisine as well as a few traditional ones.
Due to some unpredictable factors, my ‘baby‘ brother and I haven’t seen each other for over 9 years!! As such, with my relatively short stay in Hong Kong, we decided to put aside some personal time and try to have some precious and cherished ‘brother-only’ moments to ourselves.
With over 50 diversified, quality and appealing restaurants inside the shopping complex adjacent to my hotel, we decided to pick a cozy, quiet, highly-rated ‘Openrice’ restaurant as our venue, to catch up, chat and reminisce.
Social Place inside the shopping complex is one cool establishment, known for its playful and humorous take on the dining experience … .be it table ware or food creation.
Based on his past visits, my brother ordered the following dishes to ‘challenge and amuse’ me and for us to share….. some traditional and some requiring a high IQ to decipher!
- Roasted Sha-Tin Style Squab
- Pan fried head-on prawns with premium soy-sauce
- ‘ Faux Lychees ‘ - Brilliant life-like design by the creative chef! ( I’ll disclose what they are at the end of this post )
- Stir fried Broccoli flowers with roasted garlic
- Clay pot rice with sun dried local jumbo oysters and shrimps, preserved air dried Chinese sausages.
- ‘ Miss Pggy ‘ dessert ( again, mystery will be revealed below )
All in all, a most memorable and entertaining evening of long overdue, brotherly-love, augmented by some interesting and enjoyable, bizarre and groovy looking food!
PS: The ’ Faux Lychees ’ were Fried Shrimp balls whilst ’ Miss Piggy ’ was a Strawberry and milk jello pudding!
