Eat your lunch there at 11. No queue.
No queue at the Basehall location of Kam (nor at Yat Lok other than at peak lunchtime).
The Basehall location has online ordering and plenty of comfortable seating. They did a nice packing job for the goose and char siu I traveled with too!
anyone have a sense why pineapple buns with butter are so much better in HK? I regret not eating more of them when we visited.
Similar to ‘Tsim Chai Kee, Central’, Samdor does NOT offer ‘authentic’ Hong Kong style Won Ton noodle, but a ’ bastardized.’ version featuring jumbo, golf size morsels.
Traditional, authentic Hong Kong style Won-ton mien features dainty ‘bite size’ Won-ton morsels and should be garnished with yellowing chives and shrimp egg toppings to complete the total taste profile package!
Looking at your posted photo, the supposedly ’ silver thread ’ noodles also look overly thick and subpar.
The following are photos of the ones I had during my recent trip at the currently top rated Shing Kee, 10 Noodle Shop, and Tasty’s…amazing roasted sun dried flounder broth with all the correct condiments/toppings and ultra thin al dante noodles dressed with lard!
!
sometimes I wonder how many calories your posts have cost me ![]()

We took the #914 Dbl Decker under Fragrant Harbour, from Wanchai to Sham Shui Po.
The SSP District is a change of pace from the gleaming high rises and frenetic pace of HK Island. Still with the HK vibe & energy, just more residential and subdued.
KUNG WO BEANCURD FACTORY

A bowl of DOUFU FWA and GRILLED TOFU SAMPLER
A touch of their signature Orange Tang
for a bit of sweetener.
Fresh SOY MILK is so, so good!!
KUNG WO has added a larger true restaurant next door since our last visit. For a TASTE of OLD HONG KONG.
Getting dark, time for something more substantial.

WAI KEE
Another SSP Institution. Working neighborhood folk sharing tables with YSL and Channel bagged ladies. Then there’s us. ![]()
TOAST with SCRAMBLED EGG & MINCED BEEF
PORK LIVER & BEEF with MACARONI
WAI KEE classic. No Wagyu or Berkshire Branded nonsense here. Pedestrian meat prepared right, adhering to handed down decades old formulae.
An easy stroll down to JORDAN & THE AUSTRALIAN DAIRY COMPANY for their uber famous Double Steamed Milk.
Wrong!!! Closed Thursdays. Whazzup with Dat?!?!
We tempered our disappointment with some more Won-Ton Mein.

MAK MAN KEE NOODLE SHOP
Could barely see through their storefront window, what with all the MICHELLIN stickers plastered all over the glass.
Not the kinda joint where one can leisurely stage and record good photos for one’s scrapbook. OLD SCHOOL HONG KONG SERVICE!!!
Waiters are impatiently waiting to take your order, even as you are settling onto your stool at your shared table.
Menu?!?! WTF?!?! It’s a Won-Ton house, ferchrissake!!
Ok. We’ll have the Won-Ton Mein. And the Won-Ton Mein. One Wet, one dry.
Our tablemate watched with side eye amusement as this tourist started taking snaps of….WON TON AND NOODLES!!
We did the right thing. Ordered quickly, slurped down our bowl/plate quickly, and vacated our real estate for the next folks in queue.
A beautiful walk back thru Tsim Sha Tsui to the Star Ferry Terminal to complete our Tourista Tour de Force.
The city was just settling down as we enjoyed a glass of Shiraz back in our room.
Only 3 more nights to go. Already planning our return.
After sampling Mak Man Kee’s noodle rendition, you should have walked down Parkes Street, towards Austin Road and do a Won-Ton noodle tasting at Shing Kee. IMHO, the perfect bowl! …beat all the ’ Mak’s ’ hands down…be they Mak’s, Mak Shui Kee, Mak An Kee…etc.
Lau Sum Kee not too bad also.
I feel like that place, while good, has gotten more street cred than it deserves based on Bourdain’s visit there.
Although the bamboo noodles are pretty awesome.
What else do people eat there though besides bamboo noodles?
I mean, yes, the bamboo noodles essentially are the base for everything.
But the shrimp wontons are excellent, as is the beef brisket and tendon. Oh, and the tableside gratis pickled radishes are worth the wait all by themselves.
Do people have to wait long for it?
The last time we went, it was in the evening and we just got off the train from a daytrip to SZ. Not many people in the restaurant at all.
I don’t know if I would have waited, however.
we’ve only been for lunch
no doubt, user error on our part, but we usually reserve dinner for more of a formal, sit down place
These days, Hong Kong residents regularly go to Shenzhen these days because they realized that A) the food/“food” is cheaper, and B) the service isn’t surly, err more succintly, anti-service.
They only have themselves to blame.
Tea Time at a sorta Cha Chaan Teng at Stanley.
- BO LO BAO Pineapple Bun
- DAN TAT Egg Tart
- YUEN YEUNG Coffee and Milk Tea
* Condensed Milk for me
* Evap Milk for wife
Not the best respresentation of the above by any stretch, but nice to relax with some Hong Kong.
Stanley is not a must go destination, for us. On our last day full day in Hong Kong, wife had to take the dbl decker one last time.
The Stanley Market was actually a pleasant stroll, not packed per usual, because of the season and rain.
Basehall is Kamcentre Roast Goose. Not the same as Kam’s Roast Goose…
