HONG KONG -- 2025 Return Visit

Was goose consumed?

Perhaps my favorite meal of the trip was at a local place in Kennedy Town, organized by my friend’s friend (who grew up in HK and still visits a few times a year) whose brain I had been picking through the week about his non-fancy favorites, so he chose this because he thought I’d enjoy it. There was a long line of folks waiting outside on a Sunday evening.

Only negative was that I ended up getting sick after this meal, which killed my last 2 days – no one else did, so I must have eaten one bad bite of something.

I finally got a taste of clay pot rice – we ordered 3 different kinds (sausage, eel & pork ribs, minced pork & dried shrimp) – loved the crunchy bottom. Others were not as enthralled by the strong flavors.

.

The salt & pepper squid was excellent (lots of crunchy garlic and other aromatics), but the big surprise on the menu was Bombay duck prepared the same way, and which I have never eaten outside Bombay.

.

.

We got an order of sweet & sour pork, because when in Rome etc, and it reminded me of the dish I grew up with vs the syrupy one I encounter in New York these days – only slightly sweet and really well-balanced.

The dim sum was not refined but was very tasty – the shui mai were especially delicious, and the cheung fun had silky thin noodles.

No, I carried it back because:

Will be consumed in the next few days!

We did eat plenty of char siu and Peking duck before that, reports to follow.

Happy Bakery redux – just as good as I remembered.

I’m so sorry to hear you were sick, I find it especially unpleasant when traveling

Did you find techow goose? Not sure why the baked goods are so much better there as compared to nyc, the pineapple buns were clearly the best I’d ever had.

Looking forward to rest of your photos!

The biggest meal of the trip was at Mott 32. We had a room to ourselves, the menu was pre-selected for favorites and specialties, and we had plenty of wine and champagne for the celebration (brought in).

While this was certainly a “westernised” meal, there wasn’t a single dish that wasn’t delicious, and many that were excellent versions of themselves.

We ate:
Apple Wood Roasted Peking Duck
Apple Wood Smoked Pluma Iberico Pork with Yellow Mountain Honey
Traditional Iberico Pork Shanghainese Soup Dumplings
Lobster Har Gow, Yunnan Ham
Wild Mushrooms Spring Roll

Deep-Fried Black Cod, Golden Garlic, Chili
Clay Pot Crispy Free-Range Chicken, Moutai
Five-Peppers Wagyu Beef Short Rib, Tangerine Peel
Braised Eggplant, Minced Pork, Chili
Yeung Chow Style Fried Rice, Diced Sea Cucumber, Prawn, Iberico Pork, Carrots, Asparagus

Sesame Chocolate Tart, Lime & Sea Salt, Pine Nut
Dragon’s Beard Candy, Ice Cream, Crushed Pistachio
Almond & Chocolate, Oolong Tea “Xiao Long Bao”

The duck was excellent, the char siu superlative. The cod was a crisp fried and slightly smoky version of Japanese miso cod. The flavors with the eggplant were excellent. The chicken was interesting with the tableside addition of moutai / maotai, a special type of baiju made from sorghum.

The desserts were surprisingly good, though I wasn’t expecting much.

It was a a tasty meal and a wonderful gathering — even though it started with some folks getting drenched in an unexpected torrential downpour on our way there!

You ate the eggplant?

I ate the pork that flavored the eggplant — but I was wondering if anyone would notice this, and so you did

A break from the food for some pretty vistas. I was captivated again by the beauty of the place.

We had Samsen Thai for a late lunch the day we were scheduled for a sunset cruise around the harbor.

We ate:
Pork larb (served with lettuce cups)
Fried pork collar
Tiger prawn pad thai
Chicken pad see ew
Watercress with yellow beans, chilli, and garlic
Crab fried rice
Wagyu and crispy garlic fried rice

For dessert, we had Bika Ambon – an Indonesian specialty brought by a friend who came in from Jakarta. It’s a tapioca flour and coconut milk cake that’s very spongy with a pretty honeycomb structure inside. We had the regular (lemongrass) and pandan flavors. I’m usually skeptical of SE Asian desserts, so I tried only a tiny bit, but went back for a few more, it was really delicious! (Reading up on it later, it seems to be related to bingka / bibinca.)

The other dessert was an assortment of Pedas – Indian milk sweets – which I had taken with me.

Not just a big typhoon, but 4 Black rainstorm warnings (their biggest rainstorm warning of downpours exceeding 70 mm in an hour) in 8 days after that, including a 350mm (14") in 12 hours whooper yesterday, setting a new record.

I was there for 2 of the black rain days – the first killed the open day where I had planned new sightseeing, the second was the day I was leaving (better than Typhoon 8 last time :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:) and planned some small things and a bit of shopping which we skipped.

I don’t know if the torrential downpour the evening of Mott 32 got to black level, but it was red when we left home.

The last black rain day a couple of days ago was the my friend there was flying out, and he said there were landslides.

If there’s a next visit, it will not be in July or August!

Stormy weather — whether black rain or typhoons — makes for spectacular skies and seas.

And that’s the kind of dramatic nature views one get if they get on the gondola in Ocean Park before or after storms. Maybe not during.

One of several plans that got canceled between the weather and my tummy upset!
